THE TRUTH IN BEING A DANCER

Dancing for more than 15 years had been gratifying. I pay the dues with it, I was able to work alongside super talented people, I am able to travel and above all, it opened a way for me to tick off 'to be able to perform internationally' from my bucket list. But before you think the job is as easy as 1-2-3, you may need to know this:

1. ALL PROFESSIONAL DANCERS HAD UNDERGONE A SERIOUS KIND OF TRAINING.

Whether it's ballet, jazz, hip hop or pole dancing, before anybody is able to perform in front of an audience, he or she was trained and taught. Dancing is an art where the artist has to embody an intention on which a movement greatly depends on. You probably would not understand the weight of this statement if you're not a dancer. A series of movement weaved together cannot exist on its own. So much so with figuring out 'z' with the equation 'x+y'.

2. THERE'S NEVER A DAY DANCERS DON'T FEEL SORE.

A body of a dancer is stretched to its maximum daily. Surprisingly, it's actually what a dancer's body calls for because it is used to that kind of physical activity. Like any other job or profession, (1)pointing the feet as it goes off the floor, (2)smiling once you're on stage is a must and (3)making big movements as you dance is much better, are just but a few of the basic knowledge a dancer should possess. In addition, it constantly needs to be abreast of something new as well. So dancers always do a class whenever and however they can. They never stop learning and training that sometimes being sore means you are on your way to achieving something you've never done before. There are so many arising talented young ones that have a lot to offer, so the more experienced ones have to keep up.

3. YOU MAY NEVER NOTICE BUT DANCERS CAN TALK WHILE KEEPING UP WITH THAT STEADY SMILE.

Being in the show business brings out the smiley in a dancer. We are aware that an audience (with their cameras) can always sense an insincere smile so we go full out in presenting ourselves in character as we go on stage. And it's just innate to them to be at their best on stage. Undeniably, there are days that a performer needs to talk to a co-performer while a show is happening if, for example, safety is at stake. Being in the parade for 10 years had developed in me a caution button that automatically switches on when a guest suddenly crosses the streets. When that happens, I immediately give glances to a co-parade dancer to signal him/her to be safe but still professionally staying in character. Only performers themselves could sense this.

4. DANCERS HAVE A BAD HABIT OF SMILING EVEN THOUGH SOMETHING HURTS ALREADY.

This is true for dancers who own bunions, burns, bruises and injuries. Being a dancer may be subject to a greater deal of wear and tear but they would never compromise a dance number or the show that they have prepared for just because of a minor blister. The adrenalin rush from their commitment with their craft surpasses all these pains. Sometimes, this includes even the pains of the heart.

5. DEDICATED DANCERS FIND REFUGE IN BEING CORRECTED BY THEIR MENTORS.

Being a dancer is humbling enough to take each weakness as a stepping stone to whatever there is that needs improvement. In a class, they appreciate being corrected than not getting noticed at all. Good artists know how to listen. They develop a great sense of selective hearing that they find refuge from a harsh comment finding a substantial benefit from it to help them in perfecting their moves.

6. DANCERS ARE MUSIC LOVERS FIRST.

For the record, the music changes everything about a product launching, a movie, an exercise routine, a wedding and so much more. It is a much-needed element where lots of money are poured in. Needless to say, when you see dancers moving to that music, it is a logical aesthetic expression of learning exuded into a movement by a human being's physique. It interprets the music effectively and it always turns out to be something beautiful.

7. DANCERS DO THEIR OWN makeup.

As we portray a certain character, we love putting up a look that would greatly fit for it. If we dance the hula, it may be just right to draw a thicker pout as how Polynesian lips are naturally beautiful this way. If the makeup needs a mole on it because it's a Marilyn Monroe era, so be it! As far as basics go of highlighting, concealing and baking, dancers are certified make up artists, no doubt!

8. NO MATTER WHICH BLOCKING YOU PUT A DANCER TO, THEY CHOOSE TO SHINE EVEN IF THEY'RE AT THE VERY UPSTAGE.

A dancer knows the importance of working with other artists on stage. May it be a vocalist, an actor or a co-dancer, they share the same pulse. They are all friends with the floor of the very stage they perform on and they superbly stay in sync or are supportive of each other's role.

9. DANCERS AUDITION.

If learning thru dancing cannot measure against academic learning, think again. It may be different in your point of view but let's look at this one with the principle that if a fish is always judged as to how it could fly, then it would always believe that it's useless. The skills of a dancer always go thru tests called 'auditions'. It is a continuous evaluation of a dancer's skills if they are intact and are still improving. In addition, they are also encouraged to stay healthy and in shape.

10. BEING A DANCER IS MUCH LESS PREFERRED AS A PROFESSION BUT IS THE MOST SOUGHT FOR FOR ENTERTAINMENT.

Now, this may be direct to the point. I am tired of people addressing performing artists, namely, professional dancers, instructors and choreographers to be a joke. Whenever I am asked of what I do, answering with "I dance" is shoved off and most of the time laughed at. Sadly, because I'm a Filipino, it comes with a stare from head to toe. Unless I mention that I work for a very prestigious and known company for being the happiest place on earth, they would never get interested in it.

Majority of our society dictates that there's no money in this line of job. But devoting a life in the arts should never be considered limiting. In this age where everything can be learned on the internet, creativity becomes the name of the game. And being a dancer gives birth to producers, directors, choreographers and actors where delivery of such service is individually different and is like no other. I think I have made justice to the talent fee that is just rightful to them as I say this.

For now, let me enjoy getting paid in doing what I love to do. Dance.

A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE

I have always encouraged my readers, most specifically moms out there like me to embrace their lives by building or finding a community of life lovers. Today, I was able to practice yoga under Ms. Elise Hamilton in front of the Lido Beach . I will touch how yoga helps holistically in another post but today, I'd like to focus on a basic reminder that crossed my mind  seeing this photo that was taken of us dedicating an hour of practice early this morning. I forget it most of the time so today, I am thankful that it never fails to be recognised.

It's this:

"Sometimes, you need to challenge the usual to be able to see beauty from another angle. Today, as I was asked to go into this position and while looking at the palm of my hand, my vision focused on the hand goes blurred and a beautiful scenery of the bridge from below landscaped by the clear blue sky, the trees and vaguely forming clouds were concomitantly revealed. I had to sit on a split, bend towards my right fully  with right elbow on the floor and an extended left hand up with the left shoulder rotated outward. If I had shown resistance to this, I would have never seen such a beautiful picture.

So much so, if we apply this mind setting in real life, stimuli, circumstances, change, growth... if we resist on the process to leads to any of these, we might miss out what lesson, truth and beauty we had to see.

I bet so many people who have lived here in Hong Kong specifically around the area, have not been able to see it this way because they are so into looking from a man's point of view, the ordinary eye level glancing."

Today's weather was the best for a good lengthy practice. Just a little bit windy but it made us more aware of how deep breathing could ease us from attaining and holding one position to another. Not to mention, the energy and vibe each exudes are supportive and fun. Just how I wanted to start my week.

Namaste!

ZUMBA CLASS FOR A CAUSE

For my #swagginsaturday, I'd like to encourage you to join an important cause.

This is for Virmelyn Amar, a 3 years old daughter of one of our friends and fellow cast member, Johnny Alvarez Amar. Their house in the Philippines burned down and sadly, Virmelyn ended up being burnt all over. A brave and strong girl, she is still fighting for her life and is in need of more operations. Shall we, as one community, help little Virmelyn? Dance for the little one!

Zumba sessions are scheduled on July 23 (Saturday), 8:00-9:00pm and another session at 9:00-10:00pm. Both will be at Activity Room 2 of the Man Tung Sports Centre in Tung Chung. It'll just be $50 to join which is honestly a bargain price for a Zumba class! Thank you so much everyone!

SUMMER 2016 PLAYLIST

Hearing this line up just triggers that dynamic youthful soul Summer owns in you.
Dancing to these makes sweating looks sexy and sizzling hot.
Attend a class, jam, and make the junk boat trips alive with these selections.

1. "Work" from Home by Fifth Harmony ft. Ty Dolla $
is definitely is in my playlist.
It feels good listening to it and doing those HIIT exercises to this tune helps a lot.
Fifth Harmony bodies are inspiring and they make "work" sound manageable!
You want your man satisfied, turn this up
and complete those squats!

2. Becky G's "Can't Stop Dancing"
is an oldie as this official music video came out in December 2014.
But, this song is making me feel, summer is here officially.
Listen to it and tell me if I'm mistaken.

3. "Ain't Your Mama" of Jennifer Lopez
speaks for a lot of women who had gone Stepford!
This summer, remain untamed and sing this to that abusive man of yours.
He needs to be told to wake up!
Be bold!

4. "Me Too" of Meghan Trainor
is a tamer version of saying,"Bow down bitch!".
She basically talks about her life in this song
with a cool upbeat that you may want to put on while you do that long drive.
Released around May 2016, I'd say this is the school ender alright and is a Summer starter.

5. This hit prepares a long night with its cute tunes and vibe.
It warms up the dance floor, eases casual eye contacts in the club
and may just be the right kicker for your round of shots with friends.
Could there be any hotter than
Calvin Harris' and Rihanna's tandem for "This Is What You Came For"?

6. Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Steve Aoki &
Ummet Ozean for "Melody" - Radio Mix.
The mix that you may need to liven up a crossfit workout of the day routine
at the box. Turn this jam up to get you driven to do an extra set of burps.
And don't be surprised if a beach party plays this one because this is great party music.

7. The piano makes a strong impression in
"One Dance" of Drake (ft. Wiz Khalifa and Kyla).
It got a unique vibe, a sexy feel and it captures its listeners quickly.
Drake's voice is like no other that it blends well to the summer beats.
As you listen, you'll just find your hips swinging to this sooner than you'd expect.

8. "KILL 'EM WITH KINDNESS" says Selena Gomez
is a feel good music to listen to when you hike, jog
and just doing a "me" time alone at home since it works so many ways:
it relaxes, it is influential and is surprisingly motivating.
It has a subliminal message of "be the better you."

9. Justin Bieber's "COMPANY"
starts with a shot overlooking Santorini, Greece.
Wow! And the yacht shots actually say a lot about the serenity,
the waves and the good times that only happens during Summer.
Enjoy!

Do comment below to complete this list up until 10 songs
to be added to my playlist. You might have something good
that I should include in mine. Have a great summer y'all!
Peace!

LIVING THE DREAM

Every entrepreneur's game face, no matter what!
I've listened to a #TEDtalk recently that introduced her topic with this picture. Basically, it talked about entrepreneurship and how technology and network connection enhances a business model. But what got stuck in my mind the whole 20 minutes was the impression this kid gave during the entirety of it. It's this:

"Every entrepreneur had this game face inside of them in selling their idea."

And there's no other way they would remain intact if not for their belief in making their plans into a reality. For some, a big why is in place. Actually, all of us, yes, we own determination. But it's got to be showered by guts to make it happen. Here's a few that owned them guts. Here are good friends of mine whom I continuously admire and with my pursuit to inspire others, I present to you the leap they took. Let's learn from their experiences and let's get inspired to act on our dream NOW.

in Australia....

1.  KUSINA

Jon Ora,
Kusina's executive chef
Kusina is the first Filipino restaurant in Canberra, Australia.

This was when Iya and Jon visited us in Hong Kong Disneyland.
Jon, together with my former team mate in High School, Andrea Loraine Pineda or as we fondly called her, Iya, visited me in 2014 here in Hong Kong for their honeymoon.

It was nice to catch up with her hearing about her life most especially how, she had supported her husband in taking the risk of putting up his new restaurant.

Jon had worked for Grand Hyatt Hotel for 10 years before deciding on putting up his own Filipino restaurant. His Dad had attempted the same thing in the 1970's and had lots of challenges in keeping it up. In the end, they had to close down but he did more than to revive his Dad's name because Cooleman Court, Weston Creek, Canberra, Australian Capital Territory can't contain themselves once Jon's food is out to satisfy their cravings.

Besides the usual Filipino foods, they decided to infuse his knowledge of 10 years in preparing gourmet food in putting his own show with Kusina Canberra. ("Kusina" is the Tagalog term for kitchen.) On top of the Modern Filipino Food they have in the menu, they keep their edge up as they keep Kusina classy and up to date. The trend recently in the Philippines is the boodle fight where food (Filipino barbecue, garlic rice, grilled seafood and salad) is creatively presented on a banana leaf which could be a feast for a group of 4.

Are you ready for a boodle fight in Canberra?
Try booking in Kusina for a beautiful foodie experience.
Their food price ranges from as low as Aus$8-$28. They don't rely on anything else but their confidence on Asian food. They believed on the very edge Filipino food per se got to satisfy a consumer's demand for something different, one of a kind and most of all memorable. Now, following it up with the cheerful staff, Jon's talent from graduating in Culinary Arts in Australia and overseas, dedication and a family friendly approach to their customers, they were able to make it for their first business, garnering awards and getting recognised in just 3 years. Remarkable as they had begun, Jon and Iya are about to open a new restaurant called, "Kain Na!" And I don't doubt that this will soar as high as "Kusina" did.

the famous Crispy Pata (Pork Leg) of the Philippines
with atsara (carrot and papaya) for a side dish and
soy sauce with vinegar garnished with chilli and spices (which my husband loves)

They admit that it's not an easy road when you take people into liking your food most especially when it's out of their usual preference. People like sustenance, availability, speed, taste and you'll be surprised, most especially, CLEANLINESS. Sometimes, I admit, as long as where I'm eating is clean, it seems like the food is automatically alright. Kusina also encourages everybody to leave room for dessert as it should not be missed on a first visit. KUSINA is open from Tuesdays to Saturdays (9am-9pm) and Sundays (9am-2:30pm). Booking can be done by calling them at 02 6288 8461 or by logging on to their website: www.kusina.com.au.

"Don't lose hope and follow your dreams.
Business is not always sweet. You've got to have back up plans."
It was Jon's ultimate dream to put up his own restaurant. He's blessed to have the talent and the passion to pursue his dream on his own with minimal assistance.

Kusina as he co-owned with his sister and Leilani Fox, was his first. He was hands on, he came up with the menu and took a lot of guts to take the leap of faith. Some of us are ready to invest in putting up the same business, but aren't gifted with the skill. In all types of business, you have to remember why you wanted to put it up in the first place. Jon's aim is to share the robust flavours of the Filipino dishes to the people of Canberra. What's yours?

in Hong Kong...

2. SKY DANCE AVENUE
Teacher Sky with her superb students
After many days of encouraging herself to put this dance arts school for kids and teens, Sky had finally made her dream come true of doing two things she loves most... dancing and teaching.

I had worked with Sky in the happiest place on earth and the ultimate project we did together was forming the hip hop group for a show during the entire Halloween season. I knew then how hard she works for something.

For that entire project, she choreographed alongside renowned talents, edited the music to be used and worked with experienced stage managers that launched her creativity in a whole new level. Little did she know, she's being honed by fate to be one of the most sought after teachers of dance catering to the formative years of the future generation.

This dance program that Sky Dance Avenue offers was first introduced to three committed students that had very supportive parents and from then on, as she collaborated with different dance studios, her business had gone sky-rocket high!

Considering it's her first business, she believed deeply that her program of molding kids to embrace creativity through different dance genres with fun themed and skill-oriented approach classes are going to be hit. Truth be told, Hong Kong has a very strict approach in terms of schooling the kids. Sky Dance Avenue aims to balance that out by giving an outlet to the kids and allowing them to showcase the other side of them by encouraging them to excel in arts. Specifically, in dance.

For just HK$220/class for 10 session (1 term), kids are able to find their beat through Sky Dance Avenue's per term themed dance classes.

As they get thru the term, they are to develop confidence all the way 'til they do their graduation in a form of a dance concert and/or beneficiary show for the youth which Sky most recently had done with a bunch of her students and I personally think, I would want to enrol my daughter in one of her classes as soon as she is capable (my daughter is one, but she's promising in the strength that she has). Knowing how passionate Sky is, I trust her.

And that's one important factor in putting up a business. You don't take your client's trust because eventually, any business flourishes because of the satisfied clients it had produced. Don't underestimate the power of networking. Word of mouth by reviews, recommendations and referrals are necessary to keep your business alive. So, on top of your belief that you have something to contribute to society thru your craft, treat your clients right and responsibly.

Sky accomplishes these things thinking of her Dad who had inspired her to be an inspiration to others. He had supported Sky in all her aspirations and so, she aims to satisfy him even while he's in heaven. It took her a year of preparation to put up Sky Dance Avenue and so far, she had gone international first before being able to put up the school in her hometown (Philippines). Nevertheless, her students had gone up in number and the parents and other dance institutes find her program substantial for the kid's growth physically and aesthetically. It encourages the parents to keep a healthy lifestyle too so, it's not just unique to the kids but also to the parents that watch over their children. It's like embracing a whole new healthy lifestyle together.
"It is a big help to create solid ties with the people you meet
because you could get a lot of tips from them
that you didn't know will be helpful at first."
- Sky Bautista
Sky Dance Avenue Hong Kong

So, if you're interested to enrol your kids, don't hesitate to contact Sky thru the business email, skydanceavenue@gmail.com. They will soon come up with a website so to keep abreast with this great news, follow them in instagram and Facebook.

For the mean time, here's a video that Sky and the kids had put up together for your entertainment:

in America....

3. AMELIA RY CREATIONS

With today's fast paced world, it seems like the habit of sending out snail mail had gone disappearing yet it is something that delights us every time we receive one.

Millie Mellick, whom I had the privilege to know and to work with, was just handcrafting greeting cards for personal use at first. As she embraces the beauty of motherhood with her beautiful 7 month daughter, she needed an outlet for her creativity to flow. While her baby slept, she worked on one and it instantly dawned to her that this is something that she would want to do for a business.

Millie loves sending letters during special occasions and holiday season but every time she would buy a greeting card from a stationery store, it's either she will find a design so pretty but then there's a tacky message that she doesn't agree, fit for the card itself or it's the other way around. The message is so good but the design is crappy. She always gets disappointed and deems robbed of her money. She had an idea that maybe if she could make a pretty card and leave the inside blank for people to freely write what they would want to say then it would be a hit.

She acted on it right away and now, she has her own online shop in ETSY for handmade greeting cards. Her creations are all hand scored, embellished and cut by her own self and it's merely a layering of all the patterns that she likes to put together. She puts a custom cut decorative paper in the cards for a buyer to write their sentiments in. Here are some of the cards that she had on sale in Etsy but you can always check out the rest by clicking here.

Her cards are valued from US$3.50-5.00 individually but you can order in sets as well which is priced from US$14.00. It is remarkable how her artsy handmade cards were easily accepted by many and it is amazing how she has the luxury of time in her hands as she stays at home doing all of these while her baby is asleep.

"Keep pushing forward for you would
never know until you try."
-Millie Mellick
She had mentioned that she didn't undergo any form of training. It's solely her designs and this is her first business. She's thankful that she has a very supportive husband beside her that would always encourage her to do more and to push harder. She is her own worst critic so, her husband always inspires her. Because when you are an artist, it is always gamble with how people would take in your work.

A little trivia about her business is that the name was derived from her name and her daughter's combined. Her name is Millie and her daughter's name is Rylee.

If you're interested to buy some of these very unique cards, you can purchase it online thru ETSY or you can email Millie directly at ameliarycreations@aol.com. Currently, she's working towards ameliarycreations' to be sold in local stores and bookstores as well.

So there you are folks. So far these three are one of the most promising arising entrepreneurs I know. There are three things that each business owners have used in this putting up their propriety.

TIME, LEAP OF FAITH and BELIEF IN ONE'S SELF. Do let me know if you want anybody showcased thru my blog to help them put out their business. I can mention them here or put up a good and honest review as long as I get to try it. Leave a comment and share to inspire!

DANCING MAKES YOU SMARTER!

Many are asking if first lady, Michelle Obama's dedication to encouraging more and more people to eat fruits and vegetables, is working. In its partnership with her "Let's Move" Project, I support her dedication to her legacy in helping the people of America to embrace consumption of fruits and vegetables and then following it up with proper exercise. I am surprised that one of Michelle Obama's favourite shows is "So You Think You Can Dance" that helped her decide in pushing for the project.

To help her out in my own little way since I agree that getting in shape actually changes lives of people, here's something to share for #swagginsaturday. This is why I love dancing.

UAAP CHEER DANCE COMPETITION 2015

It was a great Saturday afternoon to ogle over TFC.tv's livestream of the 2015 UAAP CDC all the way from Hong Kong that featured 8 universities continuously battling over the bragging rights of being the Champion of this annual cheer dance competition.

As a cheerleader myself, I can't help but get hooked and be supportive of my own group, the UST Salinggawi Dance Troupe. Along with the best couch partner, my daughter, Brave, I allowed myself to criticise each participant according to pure personal opinion. To all of you who weren't able to watch, here are the links to each school as per real sequence on the very day.

1. UP PEP SQUAD

I honestly thought it was a very good starter. They have set a difficult standard for the rest of the competitors to beat. The level of difficulty of each stunt was undeniably high.

Personally, I find their usage of rock music to keep a cheer dance routine up to be a suicide. Everything was all good but the music pulled the vibe down. The message of infusing every deed they do with heart and mind revived it though. So it was smart to put the last blow of the routine at the end. Overall, they did a great job. UP had won Best in Pyramid and Best in Toss (NO FEAR dive to a 3rd level tango lift was superb!) with minor fallbacks and the same pyramids as before.

But I agree to most of the commentators (favouring UP) that when you are the first to perform, judges hold back when grading. They have the tendency to be strict that no matter how good the performers are, their grades are expected to be meticulously low. As you watch the rest of the performers, your emotions escalate directly with the expectation that the next one should be better than before to earn high grades. Theoretically speaking, judgement becomes inconsistent this way. Because the panel gives the paper after scoring each group to a designated personnel right after each routine. You'll understand later as I go further.

2. Next to UP, was DLSU ANIMO SQUAD

OK, it was a given. From the beginning, you could tell some of their dancers were not that confident in executing their stunts. Like how my outright comment goes in my FB status, it looked like the sound editor/manager was going thru something with his/her choices of music to be put together in coming up with the routine. "Lips of an Angel", I loved that song. But... seriously? I got no more words hearing that in their routine.

3. ATENEO BLUE BABBLE BATTALION

I AM SORRY. But it is a shame that they have the funds to get trained well and they don't get to utilise it to the maximum. The nastiest tweets are owned by the Ateneo Blue Babble Battalion this year that goes: "Oh, Ateneo Blue Battalion is next? OK, that calls for a bladder break!". I don't mean to be negative but this is just stating the real comments. Mine went: "Oh! Their theme was James Bond, I thought it was Mission Impossible" from the choices of stunts to be performed looked i-m-p-o-s-s-i-b-l-e!!!!! They weren't able to deliver. I like their costume though, since my favourite colour is BLUE.

4. NU PEP SQUAD

They didn't fail to put spectators at the edge of their seats. For 3 years now, they are consistently reigning. But compared to their previous performances, I'm pretty sure they are disappointed. It was such clean, perfect execution from last year to a lot of major falls that were hard to ignore. They will forever own the labels, "monsters or aliens" because of how strong they are with their thumblings and tosses that it gave the judges another platform for setting their standards again from this point on in comparison to how they have set U.P. in the beginning. Because of the excitement that had built up, the scores became super high and hard to beat. I'm pretty sure by this time, some of the judges had already forgotten how good the UP Pep Squad was in the beginning.

5. UE PEP SQUAD

"CIRCUS" for a theme is always risky.
But UE managed to control its tendency to be chaotic
by performing their routines as clean and perfect as possible.
Galing! Clap clap clap."

That was my opinion right after watching UE perform their entry in the 78th CDC. But watching it again made me see the major falls. I must say they need to know the pulse of each other more. The tosses were high and since my Salinggawi days, they own those sturdy bases responsible for the  high basket tosses. By this time, I can't wait to watch UST already. But they don't come 'til the last one.

6. ADAMSON PEP SQUAD

By this time, I am tired of seeing a 2 straddle jump to a back tuck stunt. (I mean, gosh! What's with it???!!! Why are all the schools doing it?) However, I find Adamson the most promising in aspiring to be in the top 3. They were consistent with their theme, they started strong and aimed to finish strong. And their theme was most unique. But modelling to be infused in a cheering routine? Never mind.

7. FEU CHEERING SQUAD

You could totally see that each of their cheering squad members worked hard in doing this dance. There are a lot of newbies I could tell as I've observed the first time I saw their routine. You could tell who are the seniors because they are keeping up the fight as shown in some of the shots. FEU's choreography and blocking are always clean. Their entry consisted of a lot of types of dances namely, broadway, circus (same with UE) and breakdancing. They are very very strong kids but because of that much work up, major falls happened that had made them lose huge amount of points.

8. UST SALINGGAWI DANCE TROUPE

It is expected that UST, a champion for 8 times alongside UP, will be giving out a good fight since it had always been a tradition of the Salinggawi Dance Troupe to aim and land as the best. For me, they deserve to win for a perfectly executed routine. Call me biased but UST has the most minimal number of errors. That alone would be enough as basis. I am more than proud of this year's performance. My husband (who is not a cheerleader at all) alone had goosebumps with the opening chants of the group. And I remained overwhelmed until the end.

Now, it is pretty controversial how NU got the first place, UST got the 1st runner up award and lastly, UP landing on the 3rd place. Looking at the score sheet, critics had written posts about discrepancies in how the judges had come up with their grades. With my experiencing in judging beauty pageants and competitions, I make use of individual category scoring but I don't choose my final 3 until the end of the last criteria for judging had been done. This way, I could readjust if it's necessary. I put small notes also at the side for the highlights that is worth remembering. But then again, that's just me. And there's no chance for UAAP's CDC judges to make amends as they pass the score sheet right after each school presents their dance.

I want to end my post with a HUGE CONGRATULATIONS TO Kuya Ramon Pagaduan IV and the rest of the UST Salinggawi Dance Troupe 2015 Competitors. Saludo po ko! I believe you deserve more than 1st runner up but it still comes as a blessing.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Since we are made from the image and likeness of God:
"The desire to create is one of the
deepest yearnings of the human soul.
"
- DIETER UCHTDORF
Being influenced into widening my horizons in pursuit of financial freedom, I've come to a realisation that the road to being rich is not easy. Time is of the essence, that's consideration number one. It's easy to say that everything follows after that. Taking advantage of the power of habit, compounding and your biggest emotional WHY are key factors. But I encounter bumps in the road every now and then such as slacking, procrastinating and doubting. According to the books I hold very substantial with my aims and goals, they always remind their readers to find a way to sustain such drive. This is due to the reason that at one point, it will be hard to keep up with your goals because of certain reasons, dilemmas and personal challenges. In short, we may find ourselves going back to our own bad habits when we don't feel some sort of gratification or reward with our chosen investment tools. And this is not just 1% of the people who tried to keep a budget (for example) to give justice to their goals. Most of the time, 99% fail because they didn't establish ways to continuously inspire themselves to keep the fire burning.

The books mentioned about choosing the people you hang out with and having mentors. Better yet, finding people that you may look up to who are experts in the field that you'd like to achieve. The most important thing is, establish your deepest WHY then find the people who'd respect and support it.

With that being said, I continuously observe myself as to how I'm usually moved, how do I get driven... Blessed be, the presence of an old colleague who now directs shows in the Philippines, taking a photo of me while performing had made me figure out that people, who become successful with their pursuit inspire me (like her) more than ever. That night, I thought of how far some of the people I knew from before had gone and I decided to feature them in terms of the small businesses they now own.

At first, I just wanted these people to be in my vision board to serve as an inspiration to me but I thought of sharing their story to all of you as well. Besides the recognition they deserve, it maybe one of the small business ideas that you were eyeing from the beginning but never had the courage to go for because of huge amounts of doubts in your head.

1. METRICA ENTERPRISES, DEL MUNDO ARCHITECTS

Townhouses built by Architect Alvin Gloda Del Mundo
a sample of what an accordion gate
looks like
OK people, I've got to start with the very familiar to me. I basically grew up seeing my mom and her siblings reign in Sampaloc, Manila (Philippines) with their real estate businesses. My parents had owned a Realty Corporation and a second-hand lumber before. They resell antique furnitures, sturdy accordion gates, high quality G.I. sheets (to name a few) in line with demolishing, building and selling town houses all over the district. Eventually, none of us had continued the business since, I ended up being a licensed nurse turned performing artist, our eldest became a dentist and our youngest graduated Information Technology turned nurse. (That almost sounded like a cycle I know!)

Any legacy ready to be built starts with a calling. And my cousin, ALVIN GLODA DEL MUNDO was called upon to design and build the modern town houses of today when he became a full-pledged architect.

"Never be afraid of CHANGE.
It will always be constant in our lives."
- Architect Alvin Gloda Del Mundo
I grew up with my cousins and Alvin was the youngest of us all. Because of that, he gets bullied most of the time and the way he reacts was actually funny. He would always mumble, "You will see, I will be somebody someday." And from then on, I know that he was a man of his word and failing was never in his vocabulary.

He graduated from Mapua Institute of Technology and had earned his license after several projects involving his mom.

My auntie, as I remember (and I hope she won't hate me saying this), was very strict on my cousin, Alvin. Being the only son, he was the only heir to manage the business that his mom had put up in great efforts. Eventually, it had paid off. No bias, but before Alvin reached 30, he had established a good reputation as a reliable manager of the family business involving her wife who's an architect as well and had been helping out in each of his project's design and utilisation.

Little trivia about the business? I treat this business as my playground. It's the type of business that has no redundancy... every project/design is like a new toy to be played in the mind.

When Alvin was young, I would always see a lot of model vinyl collector's item sort of toys for his collection. The ones that you have tinker with to build its form. He was a fan of lego too and we loved playing in the second hand lumber back then. I am more than proud of how he had become that I look up to his achievements. You can contact him at his email if you're interested to avail of his services: hellspawn_alvin@yahoo.co.uk

2. EDGE 'N POINTE DANCE CENTRE

As a performing artist, I hail dance schools. Moreover, I know how hard it is to get kids into liking dance most especially when their parents are not even fond of this form of art to begin with.

Since I have handled a class for two whole summers in Jill Ngo's Peak Dance Studio 8 years ago, I can totally relate to short attention spans, bratty attitude and clueless faces as to why they have to dance. I feel that it is such an achievement every time I am able to make a kid move somehow back then. That's why I look up to a dance teacher's dedication.

Personally, dancing had been a way for me to balance myself. Besides writing, it is an utmost way to express myself. I love it very much that I don't mind doing it everyday. Now, that I get to do it, it gets a little harder to accept each day that there will come a time that I would get old and would not be as flexible or active as I am today. To that, I always see to it that I dance like my last each time.

"Put your passion as a front liner.
Nothing will work if you're not passionate
and if you don't love what you're doing."
- Verna Fajila-Brazil
As I get to work in the happiest place on earth, I was able to come across a pool of the most talented people.

Verna, one of the prima ballerinas of her time is both a blessing and an angel for me. Trained in Ballet Philippines, I had known Verna to be part of the chorus dancers (as a gazelle) of Hong Kong Disneyland's Lion King Theatre Show.

At a volleyball match, she was one of the people who had saw a spark between my husband (now) and I upon our first meet-up 8 years ago. Little did I know then that he kept on asking her who I was.

Verna's aspiration was to become a professional ballerina since she was little. In fulfilling this dream, she worked hard and looked up to all the people that helped her reach her dreams. She realised that she was being called to teach as her passion for dance had grown enormously thru the years. She believed that she could inspire younger generations thru performing arts.

One thing I know about Verna is that, she is a very selfless person, very thoughtful and kind. This shines thru her wide range of scholarships thru the dance workshops she offers at Edge 'N Pointe. She offers a long list amounting from HK$0 to HK$500/month. She got encouraged to put up Edge 'N Pointe in Hong Kong since she had seen the difference she believes she could make. And that is to cultivate it more to those who are interested.

Name of Company: EDGE 'N POINTE DANCE CENTRE

Nature of Business: Dance and performing arts school.

Edge 'n Pointe Dance Centre caters to kids from 2 to adults that and is teaching a wide array of dance classes including:

BALLET, ZUMBA, JAZZ, CONTEMPORARY, LATIN DANCE, TAP, KINDERMUSIC.

Ownership: Verna Fajilan-Brazil

Location: Hong Kong

Number of years before it was established: She had dedicated all her life for this to be established. Business wise, it was never her intention to come up with a business but it was her ultimate dream to have a school.

Verna as part of Ballet Philippines takes a flight
in its production of Cinderella, 2002
Edge of the Product (how is it different from others): The main edge is the quality of learning they provide. As a lover of arts, Verna's aim is to cultivate the art of dancing in our society much further. For that objective to be given justice, it is important for her that the team she's working with are not half-baked. This way, the passion and the art of dance would be instilled to the students at its finest.

Invested money on the business: Money or earning is just a plus for Verna. TIME is of the essential investment since she had dedicated all her life to making this happen. She had invested in herself and the learning she got from her teachers are priceless. With that being said, she is willing to share what she had learned for the sake of learning and exploration on her students' behalf.

Price range of the product: HK$0 (for scholars) up to HK$500/class

Planned Investment, a hobby or ultimate dream?"Definitely an ULTIMATE DREAM!", says Verna.

Training: Ballet Philippines

The Nutcracker, 2003
Is this your first business? Yes.

Further plans (expansion)? A number of centres have asked their help with their programmes and they're more than glad to do so. They have one with Baumhaus (Hong Kong), Wan Chai, Admiralty.

They've also won the Group Of the Year in participating in the Aberdeen International Youth Festival in Scotland.

Now they are in Portland, sharing further their talents and widening their horizons more and more in the name of arts.

Little trivia about the business?

"We just came back from the Aberdeen International Youth Festival in Scotland. It is one of the best and biggest youth arts festivals in the world. Without government or corporate sponsorship, we depended on individual donors. Although we were only able to raise 1/3 of the costs, and I personally loaned the rest, I decided to take this risk just to foster the arts in the youth. The dancers did very well there and although the festival is not a competition but a gathering of young artists worldwide, we were surprised when we were presented the Group of the Year Award at the end of the festival. Truly heartwarming."
- Verna

Here's a glimpse of how their rehearsal went. This is truly inspiring. What more you would watch the real performance!

3. PARALLAX DANCE COMPANY

"If you are passionate about your dreams,
and you are willing to work hard for it,
GO FOR IT!
Don't let anyone or anything stop you.
Go straight to the path,
don't even contemplate on having a fall back!
Because once you do,
you're just allowing failure to seep in!
Jordan Punsalang, Art Director,
Parallax Dance Company
There is yet another colleague of mine that had put up his own dance company in Australia.

I have been under Jordan Punsalang for a scholarship grant from FEDEX Philippines. Cheerleaders were to perform every halftime for every game FEDEX team would play in the annual Philippine Basketball Association League. He was our choreographer. During the course of the season, there were dance classes in between for us cheerleaders to be aided in adapting to jazz style. Specifically, Jordan's style.

This had sharpened my skills, pushed me to my limit and had helped me love dancing even more because its orgasmic high that takes place every after show keeps me energetic enough to keep up with my studies. I had benefited on the endorphin release that takes place because I took dancing as my form of exercise back then.

Jordan was strict on all of us in general back then but it moulded me into getting more aware of my physique. What it can do and how it can perform better. Jordan emphasised the cliche, "Dancers are the athletes of God." and he continuously aims to serve his purpose by using his talents at its maximum. He teaches, conducts recitals, makes projects happen all to hail the craft of dancing, a talent that is a gift from God. I remember him saying, "I would never have a shy attitude because God had blessed me with enough armour to make me confident enough. I would never choose to take this gift for granted because I know that everyday is an opportunity to make myself better at it." as a form of encouraging shy girls that I was team mates with back then.

Of course, every now and then he has gigs so I also danced under his group, Dancecap. With that being said, windows of opportunities had opened up (choreographing for commercials, corporate events and shows).

Jordan is one of the few teachers I had that truly inspired me into digging deeper as far as passion is concerned. He influenced me greatly not only in terms of dance but also in life. Being talented is just one of his great qualities but on top of that, he's smart, confident and fearless. These are the major attributes he exemplified on me. And yet again, I am in awe when I learned that upon his migration to Australia, he had established a dance company of his own in approximately 6 months.
Parallax Dance Company is one of Geelong's finest dance companies,
composed of highly skilled dancers all over the region.

Name of Company: PARALLAX DANCE COMPANY

Nature of Business: Dance Company and Dance School

Ownership: Own Company

Location: MAAD Studios, Geelong, Victoria, Australia

Number of years before it was established: 6 months upon moving to Australia

Edge of the Product (how is it different from others): Before Parallax Dance Company had been established, Jordan Punsalang had taught in countless studios in the Philippines. With that much knowledge from his collegiate years to teaching commercially, now he's in Australia to share this extensive amount of knowledge and infusing it with what Australia had grown used to.

Price range of the product: Php AUS$12-15/class/person

Planned Investment, a hobby or ultimate dream? Primarily, Jordan did it in the name of passion. As planned, it is both an investment and a dream.

Training: He admits that he's not trained in business. But he has experience in handling dance companies and had facilitated dance schools.

What encouraged you to take the first step? Knowing how confident Jordan is, he follows his gut most of the time in making decisions. What he feels right inside is usually his decision maker.

Further plans (expansion): "Hopefully, in the next couple of years, I can put up another studio.", wishes Jordan

Little trivia about the business: Jordan had emphasised the number of dance schools in their cities which is around 40. And his dance company is the only one run by a male.

4. MAUI O.M.W. (ONE MORE WAVE)
"A positive attitude is very important.
So you need to be a people person."
- Shane K Dudoit

One thing I quite remember so well as I feed my brain with the do's and don't's of acquiring riches is that, you should always be open to opportunities. Everything starts with an idea. And if we are going to truly listen and focus, ideas are everywhere. We may even attract them. Even with the simplest things we do and the most usual events occurring every time, every day, what you usually are obsessed with, could be a good idea. Most often than not, to turn into a business. What you love doing is what you do best. A fun fact to consider is that, when you see yourself procrastinating to give way to this thing that you do best, or time stops when you actually do it, that's what usually gives you loads and loads of money. You deny to yourself that you're working nor you feel the load because you LOVE what you're doing. Hence, there's no labor to consider. It's amazing if you'll be aware of this power that you have early on. But for some people, it's never too late.

That's why the last, but not the least, person that I would be including is the one that made a business out of what he loves to do. SURFING.

Now, to be honest, I don't really know much about it but it's something worth trying. I have never surfed before. But I am more than willing to learn provided, affordable surf lessons are available.

To cater to that need of many a number of tourists  like me who don't know how to surf, yet are interested, Shane K Dudoit had put up MAUI O.M.W. in Maui, Hawaii but he had made it available to Asians by making the booking doable here in Hong Kong as well. Marketing wise, he is a Hong Kong resident so, he makes MAUI O.M.W. accessible to both the east and west. But before I go further, let me tell you something about Shane.

I've known Shane to be one of my husband's co-workers at the happiest place on earth. A true performing artist as he loves and enjoys dancing. I remember a cha cha number we did altogether and he opened it with a breathtaking choreography that was sizzling hot to put an intro to it. But going back to where he had been born and where he grew up in (Makawao, Hawaii), he was a traditional dance performer owning the authentic Polynesian grace and style entertaining hundreds of tourists that visit.

Fire Knife Dancer, Festival of the Lion King,
Hong Kong Disneyland, 2005-2014
His calling to perform to different kinds of people didn't stop there as he came to Asia to be part of  the Hong Kong Disneyland's Lion King Theatre Show. He had performed in stilts, danced in chorus and was a fire knife dancer. There's not many of them here in Asia so he shares that when he sees one, they instantly know they are connected somehow.

Hoku, as he is known to us, is fond of sports (he's a rower, shoots some ball and is very good in any water sports, most especially surfing) and he loves going to the gym. He loves doing Capoeira. Furthermore, he is attached to the ocean and he owns a shark tattoo that signifies his love for it hidden in the traditional Polynesian tattoo.

Since he was 7, he had sworn love to the ocean. He was actually a certified life guard before coming over to Hong Kong. As he becomes inspired by an acquaintance in Hong Kong to think about his life, what he wants to do and how that person believed in him lit a fire in his heart to go for it.

Name of Company: MAUI O.M.W. (ONE MORE WAVE)

Nature of Business: Surfing Schools, Private Surfing Lessons and Sales

Description of Product: My products are 9-11 ft. Soft Top Long Boards, and Stand Up Paddle Boards, and a couple of Epoxy Stand Up Boards

Ownership: Own Company

Location: Maui, Hawaii

Number of years before it was established: 7 years

Edge of the Product (how is it different from others): The approach I'm taking is not just to teach them how to surf but to educate the guests regarding the culture of Hawaii as well as this is very important to me. That way, tourists and guests wouldn't miss out on what they should see and experience in visiting the beautiful island.

Planned Investment, a hobby or ultimate dream? It had been an ultimate dream for over 7 years.

Training: Not everybody can surf. I have studied in a good surfing school in Hawaii and joined several Surfing Competitions after that. Overall, I did 30 years of training and competing.

What encouraged you to take the first step? "First step was to put God in the lead of my business. And I gotta keep telling myself to JUST DO IT. Thank God for a video in youtube. I don't know his name but it was the lead star of the first transformers and he just kept on shouting in this video, 'JUST DO IT!' Now I try to put off negative vibes that the DEVIL tries to put before me.", says Hoku

Further plans (expansion): Right now, the business is yet to be officially up. Contact Hoku to book surfing lessons in 2 or 3 months. "I am waiting for my boards to be made which usually takes 15-30 days to make and 20-30 days on the boat for shipping.", he adds.

He is also interested in putting up a school here in Hong Kong because he loves this city.

Little trivia about the business: As the business is situated in Maui, here are some of the fun facts that Hoku may share about the place for you to further be in love:

1. HAWAII became the 50th US state declared on August 21, 1959.
2. The highest peak on Maui is Haleakala Volcano 10,023 feet, 21 miles across and 4,000 feet deep. Large enough to hold the island of Manhattan.
3. Maui has 81 accessible beaches, 16 golf courses, 10 state parks and 1 national park.

These are who I have gathered so far. It's interesting how they have turned their obsession, passion, hobby and talent into a commodity available for others to learn from, adapt and share. As a reminder, selling is not wrong. Moreover, selling personal service defy nothing. FEAR is the only thing that can defy everything that you have worked for. And SELF-DOUBT feeds it.
