10 THINGS TO DO IN HONG KONG

Hong Kong, as it sits on the southeastern China, is surrounded by a naval harbour, making it a melting pot that holds a dense population. The people are made up of different kinds of races, owning different kinds of culture. On top of that, a lot of tourists come in and out of Hong Kong. So the country caters to a wide array of cravings, expectations and demands in terms of food, entertainment and adventure.

Here's a list of what to do as you visit and stay here in Hong Kong.

1. HONG KONG DISNEYLAND

Most of us love instant gratification. To Asians who had been longing to have a Disneyland experience, flying to Hong Kong becomes the first consideration. I was born in Manila, Philippines and seldom did I meet anybody there who's not a Disney baby. Meaning, we all love Disney. So if you're looking for a sure fun, money worthy and a place for your entire family, then this is definitely a place to list down your itinerary.

Don't forget to have fun when taking pictures.
Instead of doing the usual smile and stand,
enjoy and jump! It gives you almost that exciting feeling if you see
it again as you reminisce thru your Disney memorabilia.

Location: Penny's Bay, Lantau Island

Admission  for the single day pass:

a. Child (Ages 3 to 11) = HK$355
 * 3 and below can come in for FREE
b. General Admission (Ages 12 to 64) = HK$499
c. Senior (Ages 65 and above) = HK100

You may know more regarding the theme park's on-season shows, other discount prices and hotel packages thru their website: https://www.hongkongdisneyland.com . Based on experience, it's advisable to get a 2-day pass since the park had expanded greatly in terms of location that one day is not enough to cover everything there is worthy to see. I also would like to share to you that once the park opens, you may go straight to walking the farthest since for sure, the people would be going firstly to what's available in front of them but just to give out a useful information, every land starts operating altogether. So, line up for the rides that are located at the farthest end because for sure, it's not that packed yet.

2. NGONG PING CABLE CAR RIDE TO THE BIG BUDDHA

After riding the cable car,
here's a good spot to take pictures for
your own souvenir.
Ngong Ping Cable Car Ride was called Tung Chung Cable Car Project originally. This project was made to enhance the Tung Chung area as a tourist spot for the Big Buddha had gained fame amongst tourists as well did the Tung Chung Citygate Outlet Mall. The branding Ngong Ping 360 had changed it to its current name and since then, commercial establishments and shops had metastasised at the cable ride stops. I love how Starbucks situates the alley where a lot of shows happen depending on the season. To get abreast with what shows they have, go for their suggested itinerary by visiting their website, http://www.np360.com.hk .

Location: Lantau Island
(It is pretty much accessible to any mode of transportation. If you are interested to see your options as to what's the best route to take, click here.)

Admission for the single day pass:

Round-trip *Standard Cabin for:

ADULTS = HK$165
CHILDREN (3-11) = HK$85
SENIORS (65+) = HK$115

Round-trip **Crystal Cabin for:

ADULTS = HK$255
CHILDREN (3-11) = HK$175
SENIORS (65+) = HK$205

*Standard Cabin is big enough to share with other people. If there are 4 of you, most likely, you'll be sharing with one more person or 2 during the trip. **Crystal Cabin is much pricey because the entire cabin is made up of crystal glass that makes you see everything even the floor that you're stepping on to. So, it's going to give you a more memorable experience of the cable car ride. In addition, you can also go for a Private Cabin which I strongly suggest if there's enough people to go, by all means go for this one.

So, in Lantau Island alone, there are quite a lot to experience already. From Hong Kong Disneyland, to riding the cable car and shopping gallantly at the City Gate outlets, it's an assured one hell of a trip if you're going to allot 3 days and 2 nights around this area. To top it all off, there are mini jewels here and there in terms of sceneries, restaurants and beaches to lounge in. There's Discovery Bay that holds a beach, a plaza and is surrounded with cocktail bars and western restaurants. If you catch it on time, Dragon Boat Races are held here every Summer too. And cheap siu mei and pearl milk tea stalls, both Hong Kong favourites, are sold around Tung Chung area. To get hold of a number of list of affordable yet satisfying Hong Kong treats, click here.

3. LAN KWAI FONG

It's amazing to see a city come MORE alive starting from the happy hours of 5 to 10 (and then God knows up until when after that). As the busy working people swarm Lan Kwai Fong slowly for either its good wine and dine restaus, live band music or just for a street party, you would see how diverse Hong Kong had become.

Now, I should warn the lovers of heels out there. Lan Kwai Fong streets are quite a challenge because it goes uphill and may get you tired in no time if you plan to start your night early.

Hong Kong locals and tourists alike hail happy hours. Drinks could be pricey depending on which bar you want to hang around in. TIVO, ALCHEMY, DRAGON-I, SOLAS, MARLIN'S, HARD ROCK CAFE, SEVVA, RED BAR, AQUA, HONI HONI and LE BUDOIR are some of the clubs that are popular nowadays.

Now, don't expect an easy way of parking in the area. It's best to just take a cab to finish the night off. That's the best piece of advice I can give you. Of course there's always an option of taking the bus or the last trip via train. With that being laid out there, it's safe to have around HK$300 up to bring with you to party all the way.

Central, also, is accessible by ferries. If you have time, include AQUA LUNA in your itinerary. Hong Kong's harbour is one of the most sought after by a lot of traders because of its advantage in being open to navigating shipping goods. Hong Kong maximises the use of this harbour by opening it to tourists as well with its Symphony of Lights Show and surrounding it with its very own walk of fame patterned after Hollywood's, the Avenue of Stars! Aqua Luna in Cantonese is called, Cheung Po Tsai, meaning a Chinese junk operating in Victoria Harbour. To know some prices of the trips to and fro the district nearest you, check their website out.

Avenue of Stars
4. JUMBO FLOATING RESTAURANT

One of the many great things I love doing is eating good food, enjoying a very good view, sharing the experience with good company. I am enlisting this to be included in anybody's itinerary because it's truly something that you should not let pass.

I experienced brunch in the Jumbo Floating Restaurant and we had overflowing wine in between. It felt like "THE" best brunch I've ever had! The crab legs were scrumptiously sweet, the lamb shack was so melting in my mouth and their fried rice is not that simple. It got the works! Those specially mentioned is not even a third of how incredible the food is in this place.

Now, I suggest for you to make reservations at least a day before for it's really crowded during lunch and dinner time. The boat can hold as much as 2300 people but they are pretty much in demand. Celebrities love dining here too. They actually have a gallery of the famous people that had visited this huge floating restaurant making it the only one there is in the world.

Their menu has a wide array of dishes but they had made a name with their seafood dishes. There are over 100 dishes to choose from that I suggest you go for the Top Deck Brunch! They honour discounts from certain credit cards and VIP cards and if you go HK$600 and over worth of your dining experience, single receipt, you can reimburse your taxi fare by presenting your taxi fare receipt. Please do inquire from any of the staff or server regarding this information to be sure.

Location: Sham Wan Pier Drive, Wong Chuk Hang, Aberdeen

*You actually would be needing to ride a boat to reach the restaurant. It's part of the experience.

Contact details/website: 2553 9111, http://www.jumbokingdom.com

Now, how to get here...

From Hong Kong/Central Station, go to the Exchange Square Terminus where you can take Bus 70 to Aberdeen. Upon reaching Aberdeen Terminus, use the pedestrian tunnel to cross the highway. Turn right and walk towards the pier where free ferries await. The bus fare costs around HK$6.00. You can take the cab from Central too so there are options that you can consider. Whichever works best for you or your friends is highly recommended.

5. MACAO ESCAPE

A lot of tourists see to it that they get to visit Macau whenever going to Hong Kong because they want to see some shows/concerts, they want to do bungee jumping, they want to visit the church ruins and of course, it's VEGAS on steroids. It is 5 times as big as Vegas and has 10 times more with its hotel rooms. It is the only place in China where gambling is legal.

  1. Macau is a small peninsula in mainland China, across the Pearl River Delta from Hong Kong. A Portuguese overseas territory until 1999, it reflects a mix of Portuguese and Chinese influences. Its giant casinos and extravagant malls have earned it the nickname, the "Las Vegas of Asia." One of its more striking landmarks is 338m-high Macau Tower, with sweeping city views.

If you are coming from Hong Kong, check out the Cotai terminal. TurboJets are there to bring you straight to Macau within an hour. Whether you are traveling for business or pleasure, it's better to give yourself enough time allowance because so many people are coming back and forth. Trips happen every 30 minutes at least.

When visiting Macao, budget that you should have at hand should be at least HK$500 and up.

Don't miss on paying the Venetian Macao a visit to try the Gondola experience, seeing the church ruins and antique shops in the city and of course, the infamous House of Dancing Water in City of Dreams.

Venetian holds a lot of visitors per year. So don't hesitate on making a booking before hand.

VENETIAN MACAO ROOM RATES start at a very affordable HK$1,328++, the best price that offers free WIFI. Extra 30% off if you book 14 days before and 20% off if you book 7 days before.

6. VICTORIA PEAK

Location: Mid Levels, Hong Kong

This may not be much of a good shot in terms of showing what the peak could offer. We went in a
November and it seemed like it was too humid making the view of the background from the camera a little bit hazy. But this I have to say, if you didn't visit Victoria Peak when you come to Hong Kong, then it seems like you didn't come at all.

According to WIKIPEDIA, the Victoria Peak is a mountain in the western half of the Hong Kong Island. It is also known as Mt. Austin but is mostly known by the locals as "The Peak". It doesn't end in the souvenir shops, restaurants and the great view, Maddam Tussaud's is another place to check out. The original Madam Tussaud's museum, located in London, had inspired this to be as extravagant to cater to every tourist's hunger for anything extraordinary. This museum isn't just for those who are into arts but also to those who is quite knowledgeable in history and of famous and influential people.

How to get to Victoria Peak? You can, number 1, take the boring cab (excuse my sarcasm...) or you can have, number 2, a virtual tour of the mountain via the historical Peak Tram.

Located at Lower Terminus, The PEAK TRAM Historical Gallery is a way of paying tribute to The Peak Tram,
its heritage and the history of Hong Kong. Since 1888, The Peak Tram has served Hong Kong, quietly witnessing
120 years of the city's changes. The Gallery brings back many memories for local visitors and
gives overseas visitors a glimpse of how the Pearl of the Orient has come to shine.

7. HONG KONG'S LOVELY SPOTS

taken during a colleague's birthday party
Hong Kong holds an array of nice parks, areas, exhibits, malls and galleries which are worth the space in your android. Let me start off with the Tsing Ma Bridge.

The Tsing Ma Bridge is the longest suspension bridge in the whole world that can both hold rail and road traffic. I get to pass thru it twice a day, every working day. This bridge connects the Lantau Island (my working place is situated here) to the rest of Hong Kong. So basically, Tsing Ma Bridge serves me just right. Not to mention, it gives me a breathtaking view each time, day or night, it's beautiful. And the more I appreciated this place when I got to see it from Park Island.

Whenever I see Park Island, "it is my dream place to live in in Hong Kong", I say. But for now, I can't so all I can do is admire the place. It's easy to go down here anyway. Most especially during Summer as the beach is open to public I recall.

So, just hit Tsing Yi Station via MTR. Take Exit A1 and then take a mini bus 308M or from there, you can access Park Island via taxi too. Whenever I see this place, I easily compare it to Discovery Bay because they're both pretty and somehow owns that serene atmosphere but then I remember how inaccessible Dbay is by cab and then it makes it a no contest from there.

Noah's Ark is another tourist attraction that you may see while you're in Park Island. It had become an iconic place that stands up for Ma Wan's mission in fostering family values, love, social harmony and care for the environment.

Parents, learning institutions, NGO's, religious groups and businesses are encouraged to bring their kids, staff and instructors here to propagate social awareness early on in terms of inflicting love for self and others, love for the environment and love for life itself. The park has a an Ark Expo, Ark Garden, Adventureland, Ark Life Education House and a Treasure House. So there's a lot of things to do and see.

Operating hours: Open daily from 9:45am until 5:30pm
Admission Tickets: General - HK$168
Child (3-11) and Senior (65 above) ticket: HK$138
* If you'll purchase your ticket online, you can get discounts.
* Religious groups, NGO's and schools may contact Noah's Ark Mission Development Team at (852) 3411 8714 or email to: mission@noahsark.com.hk

the fabulous Park Island
As you take the MTR and goes to an exchange transit like Tsim Sha Tsui, it extends to different establishments and the most accessible that I find is K11. It has a posh feel with its classy interior and classic art pieces on display. It extends to an alley that is decorated depending on the season. Once I passed by it in December and they had put up a mini kaleidoscope world. This mall has luxurious shops that every big spender would never have a problem getting magnetised to.

This photo is my most favourite of all because it is made up of toasted bread.

K11 Mall is a shopping mall in Hong Kong located in the Masterpiece, honed by New World Development and was completed in December of 2009. It is claimed to be the first "Art Mall" in the world. Hyatt Regency, one of the most known prestigious hotels, which sits atop one of its floors (K11 got 6 floors) is the cherry on top of the ice cream.

Location: 18 Hanoi Road
Operating hours: Open daily from 10am-10pm
How to access via MTR: Take TST Exits D1, D2, G and N1

1881 Heritage should not be missed as well. It got seasonal decors that are good for photo ops and it needs little photoshoppin'! After shopping in Tsim Sha Tsui, head to this scenic area where you can sit and just get mesmerised with its Victorian era appeal. 1881 is a real Hong Kong experience. Going there is for free, taking photos is for free, sight seeing is for free and yet you get hold of a true historic place for these are the headquarters of the Hong Kong Marine Police from 1800s 'til 1996. They have preserved the place but had embraced transformation by putting up designer shops, fine dining restaurants, a heritage hotel and an exhibition hall. This is actually across the Avenue of the Stars so, you can visit these all at the same time in a day.

There are a lot more to learn about how historic this place is as you visit their website.

How to get there: Take the MTR, go down at TST and then take Exit E, walk towards Salisbury road, turn right then take subway (pedestrian tunnel) next to YMCA to 1881 Heritage.

8. OCEAN PARK

Given, Ocean Park is one of Hong Kong's oldest attractions. I remember it standing there since the first time I visited Hong Kong way back 1994. Up until now, it doesn't fail to bring excitement each time. My husband still couldn't deal with some of its suspense rides but visiting here is still entertaining. Most of its attractions cater to the pumping adrenalin of the young adults but now, I'm thinking of bringing my daughter for her to get acquainted with the sea world. They are known for their huge aquariums and as time went on, it served as an attraction to many families, extending fun to different age groups. They have cable cars too as it connects two mountains building the entire park.

Admission and operating hours could be accessed and booked by clicking here
Location: Wong Chuk Hang, Hong Kong Island
Contact details: (852) 3923-2323
Website: www.oceanpark.com.hk
How to get there: Take the Bus 629 from Central Pier 7 or from MTR Admiralty Station, take Exit B and alight at the park

The park is composed of the following attractions:
1. Adventures in Australia
2. Shark Mystique
3. Polar Adventure
4. Old Hong Kong
5. Thrillmountain
6. Rainforest
7. Aquacity
8. Amazing Asian Animals

Take your pick and hopefully, you can finish the whole of it. This advice may be unsolicited but trust me, you will need to at least be in your most comfortable shoes in visiting Ocean Park.

9. SAI KUNG

Hong Kong makes sure that all its natural resources are well protected. That protection extends up to its rich marine life and remote areas. Sai Kung is considered as the "backyard of Hong Kong". That being said, it's kept tidy and untouched because of its remote location. Hence, it had become an attraction amongst adventure seekers and divers alike to experience its diverse marine life.

Junk Boat Trips are "it" in Hong Kong most especially during the Summer season. For many adventurers, Sai Kung is a paradise. Besides swimming, kayaking, snorkelling and doing other fun water activities, Sai Kung is also a good place to hike and had been enjoyed by a lot due to junk boat trips that took voyage.
I, personally was a fan of junk boat trips. Some of the volcanic rock formations from 140 million years ago had enveloped its coastline with the perfect venue for having a photo shoot for your own remembrance and of course, for fun. Its waters aren't too salty and no harmful corals underneath so it's really nice to swim in its beaches. Summer maybe a little tricky though because this season in Hong Kong is also the rainy season. Junk boats would have to go back to Sai Kung Pier when this happens and will stop operation. It's safe unless you choose not to... if you know you're drunk, don't swim from the junk boat to the beach. YOU SHOULD TAKE THIS ADVICE SERIOUSLY.

Junk boats fee depend on how many are onboard. Three years ago, prices start from HK$200/person up excluding drinks (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages). When you say junk, don't expect that it's a dirty boat, it's actually presentable enough for you to have a good time and usually, they have karaoke set up inside. So, this usually affects the price but overall, the experience is worth it.

As the sun sets, Sai Kung got restaurants that are ready to impress you with fresh seafood. Don't hesitate to take your time in having dinner with some friends and colleagues to complete your Sai Kung trip. A more detailed booking for different kinds of yachts, boats and Sai Kung packages may be checked out here.

How to get to Sai Kung pier:

GETTING TO SAI KUNG

(i) MTR to Choi Hung MTR Station then from station exit C2 take Green Minibus 1A (24 hour service approx every 3-5 mins – journey time about 25 mins) to Sai Kung Minibus Station (next to the promenade). KMB Bus 92 (see below), also stops outside exit C2 of Choi Hung MTR Station.

The green minibus stop for Sai Kung is located about 50-metres to the left, on reaching street level from exit C2 of Choi Hung MTR Station

KMB Bus 92 to Sai Kung, which starts at Diamond Hill Station (see below), also passes Choi Hung Station, where the bus stop is located about 50-metres to the right, on reaching street level from station exit C2

(ii) MTR to Diamond Hill MTR Station then KMB bus service 92 (approx every 12/20 mins – journey time about 40 mins) to Sai Kung Bus Terminus (next to promenade).

(iii) MTR to Tseung Kwan O MTR Station or Tiu Keng Leng MTR Station, then from the bus terminus at either of these stations, take NWFB bus service 792M (every 20 mins – journey time approx 40 mins) to Sai Kung Bus Terminus (next to the promenade).

(iv) if travelling from other parts of the New Territories KMB BUS SERVICE 299X from Sha Tin Central Bus Terminus (under New Town Plaza and Sha Tin MTR Station) via Ma On Shan Town Centre to Sai Kung Bus Terminus may be useful. Buses operate at about 10 minute frequency and the journey takes about 35 minutes. The journey includes a scenic stretch above the shores of Three Fathoms Cove and below the peaks of Ma On Shan Country Park.

Red Minibus from Mong Kok - a 24 hour frequent red minibus service operates between Dundas Street, Mong Kok and Wai Man Road Minibus Terminus, adjacent to Sai Kung Waterfront Park. The fare at January 2015 was HK$16 and Octopus Card is accepted on most minibuses operating this route.
A 24-hour red minibus service operates between Dundas Street, Mong Kok and Sai Kung
10. LADIES MARKET

A little bit of shopping won't hurt. In fact, if you reach the ladies market in Mong Kok, it's impossible for you to shop just a "little". Kidding aside, if you plan to buy souvenirs like I LOVE HK T-SHIRTS, replicas of Hong Kong artifacts and Hong Kong signages, this is the place to be.

You will be challenged with your Cantonese and bargaining skills as you go thru the entire street.

*Tip: Try walking a little as they give you the price pretending not to be interested and that the price doesn't work for you. They'll start to awkwardly pull and ask you discreetly, "how much?" or "give me good price." That's when you bargain from half the original price the vendor gives you. Trust me, at one point, they'll give in to a low unexpected price.

The best time to check out the Ladies Market is at night. It gets pretty crowded late in the afternoon onwards and closes around midnight. During the weekends and holiday season, expect a large number of people swarming to the Ladies Market. Goods prices start from as low as HK$15 and up.

Location: Tung Choi Street, Mong Kok, Kowloon

How to get there? Simply take the MTR Red Line, go down to Mong Kok then take Exit E2. Then walk along Nelson Street passing 2 blocks.

Now on the other hand, there's a 15 storey level mall if you take Exit E1. It leads you to the Langham Mall.

Langham Mall

Now you see, it owns 2 large scale escalators, measuring 83 meters high. The building is made up of gargantuan rock facade and the Happy Man stands affront which was sculpted by Larry Bell, making it a monumental landmark of Mong Kok. This mall is 15-storey high, with 2 basement levels, holds 665 hotel rooms and a carpark with 250 parking spaces. If you have extra time from shopping in the Ladies Market, sit for lunch or have a quick coffee break at this place. They have a huge H&M, Ralph Lauren, an alley of the luxurious make up brands and they have a serene spa upstairs catering to both the mall spectators and hotel residents.

Location: 555 Shanghai St., Mong Kok

HOUSE OF DANCING WATER

Every year, for my birthday, I aim to get out of the country as a form of celebration to see and experience something new. For me, there's no better way than having a getaway as I age up to reconnect with myself and getting immersed in a different culture every now and then had served me well. I aim to achieve this on each trip.

This year, I received the best birthday gift of all which is my daughter, Brave. And so I thought to myself, maybe there's no need to travel this year. Yet, my husband had to take a relative to Macau so, he asked me discreetly how would I like to see the House of Dancing Water. I was exalted!

If you plan to eat around the City of Dreams, The House of Dancing Water
tickets offer 10$ discounts on selected restaurants and diners.

I have always aimed to watch shows as much as I can to feed my artistic soul but it was my first time to experience visual theatre. I've only held as much knowledge of Cirque de Soleil via youtube so as a critique, it was pretty challenging to analyse the story it presents to the audience. Everything that you need to know about this show can be researched on its website. Good thing I read about it before being able to watch so I somehow understood how the elements of the show are related to each other. My husband didn't and it was actually interesting to hear his commentaries solely based on what he saw. He somehow finds some parts astoundingly good (e.g. motorcycle stunt exhibition, synchronised aerial stunts and the group of black men forming pyramids during the fight scene) but it makes him wonder, how could he put the puzzles together with such modern presentation when the core of the story itself started with an ancient storyline. As bugging as it may seem, we got entertained overall.

The stage of the House of Dancing Water,
in City of Dreams Macau,
that is 26 feet deep and is 2 billion
worth of investment.
I am amazed by how the stage of 26 floors high could transform from being a deep diving pool to a dry surfaced stage in just less than 1 minute. The first act was welcomed by a strong performance of divers (perceived by Moi as pirates of some sort) coming atop a ship unleashed by a powerful mist. It could be a simple element seen by the audience but my jaw dropped when the thick mist could cover the ship and clear out to present another kind of stage in again, I have to mention, less than a minute. The lady being rescued who dances ballet very gracefully deserves that much applause but the leading man needs to pump it up in the fighting scene. It was pretty predictable when he wasn't the one doing the motorcycle stunt yet he had to act as such. I was kind of imagining that the evil queen could've been more powerful of a character if it was a black woman. I hope this wouldn't be thought of being a racist. In general, that character needs colour regardless if it's brown or black. We watched from B reserve and all that I could describe her with is that she's tall and skinny. This is from a critic's point of view.

Overall, I am in awe of how they can perform this show twice a day, 5 times a week. (For all those planning to see it, you have to know that they are dark every Tuesday and Wednesday.) No wonder the performers owned chiselled bodies. In that show, they dive, swim and dance all at the same time. They do things that are beyond performing. They all own special talents that are worth seeing. But in doing so, choose to be an empty vessel. Just take in what the show has to give and you'll find the uniqueness of the show. I believe comparison won't help too since it is like no other.

OCCUPY CENTRAL

For my #laidbacktuesday , I always aim to post videos that are informative, funny and relaxing. But for the entirety of writing and keeping a blog, I aim to inspire whoever gets to visit my site. Today, I choose this video made by a friend of what "Occupy Central" is all about.

I am writing this with an aim to clear out what truly is happening in Hong Kong since last Wednesday, September 24, 2014. Occupy Central is a form of a protest movement that had called out concerned Hong Kong citizens and residents, led by a large student body, to fight for the right to elect their Chief Executive. Under the said umbrella movement, they gathered affront the central government offices, blocking all busy streets with an aim to be heard out. Last night, they have sang the song of revolution, "Do You Hear The People Sing?" It is truly admirable how this peaceful protest had come about. The same friend of mine who shot this video took a walk in Connaught Road and witnessed how the people had come peacefully in going about their aim. He was amazed with how they have kept the streets clean and how no form of Vandalism would be seen. Each protester show concern for one another by giving food to those who have not yet eaten and to those who were there for a long time already. There was also a time that they have lit their lighters up while the night was pitch-black  and as the photos were posted up in a lot of social networks, it looked very peaceful.

Unfortunately, the Chinese administration doesn't have any reaction towards the movement nor the seated Chief Executive of Hong Kong as well which is pretty devastating to accept. If there's some agreement that's happening under the table, we don't know. In addition, a friend in China had fed me that it had cut all access to social networks and media even Instagram. For whatever reason it may be, this picture suggests that the Chinese government is feeding its people wrong information.

There are a lot who describes this Umbrella Movement (called so because protesters had brought their umbrellas as coverage from the tear gas, pepper spray, etc.,. used to disperse the illegal protest by the police) as hopeless, desperate and ambitious but seeing these efforts make me feel much in awe as I admire the Hong Kong people coming together as one. Tonight, literally, umbrellas had swarmed public roads as it rained in Central area. Tomorrow, the revolution is expected to be jam-packed because of the upcoming holidays dated Oct. 1 (National Day) and Oct. 2 (Chung Yeung Festival).

SUMMER 2014 PLAYLIST

The first month of Summer in Hong Kong is here and it's time to have a makeover of that video playlist to get you up on time everyday.

1. LA LA LA (BRAZIL 2014) FT. CARLINHOS BROWN BY SHAKIRA

This first video is a mix of house music and Spanish Mardigras beats as I listen to it starring none other than Shakira. Once again, she embraces her unique gift as she dances freely featuring a football crazed MTV that even animals are into it. The World Cup is expected to open in Brazil in less than a month as it is the host for this season.

2. FIRST LOVE BY JENNIFER LOPEZ

To those who had told Jennifer Lopez, "Bitch be gone!", sorry to disappoint you. She is still a competition despite the age and a line of controversies. I particularly admire how she had sustained her taste for innovation and how she is proving that success is sweet the second time around.

The lyrics are right for her though in finding the first love so that she doesn't have to bounce from one relationship to another. Good thing for other people (Ben Affleck), they know how to channel their frustrations to something productive (the movie, "ARGO").

3. PRETTY HURTS BY BEYONCE

Miss USA competition is about to commence this June and I can't help but think about the contestants involved. Or maybe, to all the girls that aspire to be on stage in general. I am wondering how much of the truth is laid out and I agree with this video that says it all of what price you pay to just be given the label "pretty". So many that are in the limelight (beauty queens, ballerinas, actors, performers) are expected to be skinny in order to belong to the "beautiful" group.  Reality bites alright.

4. "IT'S ON AGAIN" BY ALICIA KEYS FT. KENDRICK LAMAR

I'm not a fan of the movie, "The Amazing Superman" but of Alicia Keys? No doubt. A feel good beat though there are some segments of the song (chorus) I find awkwardly tuned or put together. I love how her hair is pimped in this video. It actually reminds me of the old hairstyle that was fashioned by old school rock bands like Roxette and New Kids on the Block. But it gives her face a fresh look. This new vibe she's giving out is fab, chick and daring. I love it!

5. "SUMMER" BY CALVIN HARRIS

A perfect beat to put on this Summer is this house music bound by love, good experiences and memorable time (in lyrics) which everybody, and I mean EVERYBODY expects during this time of the year. Gather your friends, share a good time and play this music to set it all right.

6. "WE ARE ONE (OLE OLA)" BY PITBULL, CLAUDIA LEITTE AND JENNIFER LOPEZ

It's not just me who commented that Shakira had done a better World Cup anthem as this one that you are about to see is the official 2014 World Cup Song. My personal comments go:

- The beats are dull.
- Pitbull is just too fancy to sing about "being one" with the people or the sport. I don't even know if he can do any sports for that matter.
- It's not different from the songs he and Jennifer Lopez had worked on. People won't remember it as much as "Waka Waka" of Shakira previously.

Here's an overview from www.billboard.com. See for yourself. Meanwhile, here's the video and you can be its own judge. Let me know of what you think about it compared to Shakira's by commenting below.

7.  "LOVE NEVER FELT SO GOOD" BY MICHAEL JACKSON AND ADD ONS BY JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE

For the lovers of life and to celebrate it as much as how Michael Jackson's fans, friends and colleagues, do in coming up with this song, listen up and get inspired on how to get immortalised. We all know that Michael Jackson had been one of the starters of MTV, left a huge influence on all musicians in the world, and most importantly, emphasised LOVE in all his works, music and dance. I admire the unity of all races that this video shows. Still, he's able to make people come together in the name of music even when he's gone. Long live MJ!

To the readers, thanks for dropping by and advanced one
to people who'll share it too because the more people who'll
watch the La La La Song by Shakira,
the more hungry children will be fed in schools
that offer free enrolment to the less unfortunate ones.
GOD BLESS US ALL.

SUMMER IS HERE!

Hello there fellas!!!

The month of May will have its last weekend soon and that means only one thing. SUMMER is fast approaching. And besides the summer breaks that youngsters look forward to, activities here and there are just overflowing. While the sun is up and shining, endorphins run freely amongst us that drives us to be alive, adventurous and up and about.

A line of events is what I wanted to share to you in this blog post that may help you zest up your summer vacay.

MAY 30

Mitu's tribe at Bahce Turkish Restaurant
You may be wanting to try something different here in Hong Kong as far as Turkish food and a one-of-a-kind ambiance are concerned. Lantau Island holds a gem that offers good company, delicious food and fabulous music as my good friend, Khaya Mshengoristo Maseko, who recently just banged a role in the UK Tour, Lion King, joins Mitu's Tribe. Mitu's Tribe had been one of the most developed group of musicians that had marked good times in Bahce Turkish Restaurant, whose performance is looked forward to by locals of the island and by those who have experienced hearing them play. I am inviting you to come out to feel the summer breeze in Lantau and hear them out by dropping by on Friday between 9pm to 12am.

MAY 31

Macau is the place to be this weekend as South Africa's WBA undisputed featherweight world champion Simpiwe "V12" Vetyeka competes with Philippines' Three Division World Champion and 2012 Fighter of the Year, Nonito "the Flash" Donaire in Cotai Arena at The Venetian Macau Resort in Macau, China.

Donaire (mistakenly pronounced as "Doh-neyr" but should actually be "Doh-nigh-re"), who was born in Talibon, Bohol, Philippines grew up in General Santos city like Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao and went to school together at one point. But at age 11, he lived with his dad in in San Leandro Bay Area and was exposed to boxing to channel out his energy to sports and to get him out of the streets. Now, he is  considered a Filipino American professional boxer as he had worked out the ladder from one victory to another with a promise to himself not to disappoint all that supported him, most especially his father, after a loss to Rosendo Sanchez in 2001. From then on, he owned a winning streak for 12 years.

Early years in boxing had almost made him dread the sport because of too much pressure and he had come to a point that he didn't enjoy it anymore. But once again, he stayed in the sport for his love of his father and will prove that as he steps on the ring this Saturday. He won against Vic Darchinyan, landing a left hook over a non-title fight in his last battle.

All the best to you fellow Filipino, Nonito!!!

JUNE 1 & JUNE 2:

Of course, special mention to the hot and sizzling dragon boat races that will be held in Discovery Bay and Stanley beaches this coming June 1 and June 2 respectively. It's not to be missed as it is a long weekend for most of the companies considering June 2 (Monday) as a holiday.

2013 TEAM MUSHU Achievements
Once a Mushu, always a Mushu! So let me plug them and the Magic Team, both from Hong Kong Disneyland, who had worked hard as they will be joining the mentioned races.

As we all know, TEAM MUSHU becoming one of the strongest teams to beat, will once again come out to defend a title for the Dragon Boat Race Competition held annually in Discovery Bay. It surely would be full of fun and adrenaline rush as they come to bring heart pumping action both at the race and on stage. Their cheerleading team had always been a guest performer showing off bursting split jumps on air and mighty entertaining pyramids and stunts. Their performance usually comes right before the awardings happen. This was taken last 2012 when I used to still be a part of it. In 2013, I trained to paddle instead with my husband.

I was just able to race one time because now, we're expecting our little one
so I will just be one of the expectators for now.
Needless to say, I'll always be my husband's no. 1 fan so I will come
out to support this Sunday for sure..

With the words, "ONE TEAM, ONE HEART!", allow me to share their road to victory last 2013.

With the SunLife Stanley Dragon Boat Races, the Magic Team will be competing against a huge number of teams. Now, very much advertised on TV, I'm pretty sure they will not come unprepared. They are driven, they are fearless and they will race their heart out and all out support on them too. A shoutout to my friend Sylvia Tsang who had recently joined the team, Ga Yao!!!!

Also happening on June 1 is a recital where Disney babies (some of the Disney cast members's kids are performing) will be featuring a presentation. Edge'n Pointe Dance Centre is holding this event where in the proceeds is aimed into granting a dance scholarship program for the less privileged children in Tung Chung.

If you are looking for an inspiration for your little one as to what to engage in this summer, come and take them to this recital and maybe their interest in dancing might get ignited. Who knows? You might be watching them the next time during their own recital.

JUNE 6 TO JUNE 8

KIDSFEST offers a 10% discount to the upcoming drama theatre play, Rapunzel. All you have to do is quote ABA14 as you book your ticket via www.hkticketing.com or by calling 31 288 288.

Remember, "THE ONLY WAY YOUR KID WOULD GO OUT, IS IF YOU GO WITH THEM." So, between these two, (dance recital and drama theatre), you can bond with your kid and you'd give them something to think about, get inspired with and talk non stop why their 2014 summer break is an unforgettable one.

JUNE 8

MISS NEVADA 2014 - NIA SANCHEZ
Don't miss out also on vegging out at home over the tube. Believe it or not, this is the time of my life where you have to get off your butt, to earn a buck. So, I treat it as one of the luxurious moments nowadays. Hahaha! It is rejuvenating and I give it to myself every chance I get. But there's got to be something special on the tube for that.

A very good colleague turned friend had been blessed with a chance to compete against the beauties of the United States of America. I am rooting for her on this day as she stands up for what an American Beauty is all about. I know Nia Sanchez, this year's reigning Ms. Nevada USA, from work and there's only one thing I could tell about her. She doesn't have a problem keeping it real. I hope you make it Nia!!! Supporting ya all the way from Hong Kong.

WINTER 2013

WINTER is the coldest season of the year in temperate climates, between autumn and spring. It is caused by the axis of the Earth in the respective hemisphere being oriented away from the Sun. Different cultures define different dates as the start of winter, and some use a definition based on weather, but when it is winter in the Northern Hemisphere, it is summer in the Southern Hemisphere and vice versa. In many regions, winter is associated with snow and freezing temperatures. At the winter solstice, the days are shortest and the nights are longest, with days lengthening as the season progresses after the solstice.

- WIKIPEDIA

This year, winter in the Northern Hemisphere (which is responsible for the north east monsoons combined with warm maritime airstreams, affect Hong Kong's weather) starts on December 21, 2013 and will end March 19, Wednesday.

So many things come into mind when we talk about this promising season. Glitter, laughter, hot cocoa, abundant food and a lot of gatherings are just but a few representations.

Let me share to you my top 10 favorites as this season approaches:

1. WELCOMING THE HOLIDAYS

Here in Hong Kong, Winterfest will begin on November 29 this year as the country welcomes the holidays with spectacular festivities. The city is lighted up with grand Christmas lights and explosive decorations that attract thousands of tourists worldwide annually. The Harbour City in Tsim Sha Tsui are packed most of the days of the Holiday Season. For shopaholics and most especially tourists, it is advisable that you take care of your personal belongings that it really gets too crowded even if you love that "Boxing Day" vibe. Hong Kong is safe but with that much shopping bags that you'll carry around as you shop, it's more likely you'd misplace your phone while paying or when trying on the clothes that you wanted to buy. So, there's a chance that you'll loose it.

IFC in Central, Hong Kong offers the stylish, high-end decors to showcase Hong Kong creativity. Couture designers and fine artists, last 2012, had graced the mall with classy decors with subtle blue and white lighting to let the cooling effect of Christmas succumb on you.

Langham Mall in Mong Kok remains competitive as they have the longest elevator. Same theme, but bigger treats and freebies given by promoters surrounding the area. It makes me remember the famous Ayala strip in the Philippines, almost all malls strive to put up the best. A line of buildings would flaunt what they got in terms of their Christmas decorations. The louder, the better!

Langham Mall, Mong Kok

Just when I had to purchase make up in Elements (one of HK's finest malls located just outside the KOWLOON MTR station), I found their decor so warm and unique with miniature villages covered with snow. Much more awaits as Winter approaches.

Now, does it snow in Hong Kong? Thank God, no! There was a time, I think 2009 when the winter months had taken a long toll. I remember gazing out at the window asking when will the sun come out again. Personally, I prefer a sunny day than a grey day. Hong Kong holds a chilly 0 degree Celsius temperature as the country's coldest ever recorded. It doesn't snow here but the breeze that gushes thru could be freezing during the months of January and February as the result of the melting ice from China and Russia.

2. Yes! SHOPPING!!!

So, since it gets cold and breezy, it is a must that you'd keep yourself warm. Put out those scarves, purchase a good pair of boots and choose a good jacket. Light layering from Autumn might just be needing a bonnet, pair of gloves and probably an additional outer cover.

Starting from head to toe, I love wearing bonnets and when it gets too chilly, I wear ear muffs. I've had some bubble jackets but for formal dinners and serene gatherings, it's good to be able to use a coat or two. Neutral colors are always the best. You can combine them with a lot of shades and easier to pair with your footwear. Long sleeve warmers are good investments. And so are leggings or thick panty hose for your dresses. Winter leggings had become trendy since last year. Probably one of the reasons why I am not that in love with Winter is the unavailability of explosive hues to choose from with its basics but the winter leggings makes this season more enjoyable. Sweats are good when you stay home and decide to watch TV over a hot cup of coffee. Sweats are partnered with a hoodie most of the time that for me, I find it as my go-to hibernating clothes. Boots are preferred during Winter above all else. Ugg Boots from Australia, I believe, are the most sought after here in Hong Kong. But since winter leggings became a hit, elf shoes or oxfords were instantly welcomed as they emphasized the playfulness of the getup.

Besides the fact that it happens once in a blue moon, Christmas is the time of giving. And that's the ultimate reason why it's good to do Christmas shopping. No matter which form: gifts, time, effort, love, there is something about this time of the year that makes "giving" oh! so special! It is important to remind all of you to do your Christmas shopping early. So that you'll get to enjoy my next favorite.

3. WRAPPING GIFTS

With the Christmas medley on the background and the aroma of cinnamon blending in with your hot coffee, wrapping gifts becomes instantly delightful. This is something that I inherited from my aunties. They are amazing in wrapping gifts as they can make it look like a t-shirt or an explosive bag of treats, it was just enticing to see it. Most especially, once it gets under the Christmas tree, you don't want anything except open them but as for my family's tradition, we have to wait until Christmas eve to open the gifts altogether. Elders in our family give "aguinaldo"s as well and as I have come to age that it was my turn to give it out to my own godsons and goddaughters, I resorted to giving gifts instead. It's much fun for kids. If I give out money, I feel like I'm teaching them to lose the idea of giving.

4. GIFT-GIVING

The art of gift giving is all about, how well you know the person. It's not just about buying any gift. It's more of,

if I give this to my friend, would I like it to be given to me too?
What is my wife's favorite color?
What is that one simple thing my husband would need endlessly?

You'll be surprised when the simplest detail about that special person helps you get the perfect gift. So as I ended #3 with the statement, "If I give out money, I feel like I'm teaching them to lose the idea of giving" = it is about giving a chance for the relationship to flourish more. Because money just spoils everything about gift-giving. It gives the receiver the notion that it's the most convenient thing to give. Somehow, it wasn't given that much time and effort. Sometimes, a personal touch also can make it extra meaningful. Your gift should remind the receiver of you. Of course, my opinion goes for just giving gifts during the holidays. At weddings, funerals and baptismal gatherings, monetary presents are advised. In Chinese culture, giving of money is more of blessing the person with good fortune. So, either way  the most important detail about giving gifts is, it is something given from the heart and it is given not to expecting anything in return.

5. HOLIDAY PRESENTATIONS

From the year 2000, I have been blessed with the opportunity to be casted in so many holiday shows. I've done events from the Philippines and up until now, I still get to perform and extend Christmas greetings to thousands and thousands of people every year.

Let me give you a throwback to my most favorite amongst all of these shows by watching this.

Yes, it is beautiful and magical indeed.

When I was still young, I've always asked my parents to take me and watch Disney on Ice as a group comes in Manila to perform for the whole month of December. It never happened but God had blessed me to be part of spectacular shows at the present here in Hong Kong Disneyland. Come and see the Christmas Illumination everyday in the park at 6:30pm. Hear sweet carols and see Hong Kong Disneyland's giant Christmas tree light up with mini fireworks as Goofy, Mickey and Minnie rides the sleigh to help you thru the countdown.

6. WINE AND CHEESE

Festivities are just not complete without the line up of  Thanksgiving dinners, Christmas parties, and New Year's Eve countdowns. Nobody wants to miss out on turkey, the roast beef and the pumpkin pie. But being guilty afterwards is harder to deal with. One way to help you out in digestion is the wine. Its acidity aids in the churning of meat. To some people, it's too much of an astringent that they need cheese to balance it out and to keep the mouth's moisture intact.

When talking about wine, my personal favorite is rose wine since it's somewhere in the middle of both red and white. Not too dry and not too strong. This habit had been quite cultural. Not everybody would go for it. But the beauty of having some wine and cheese lies on the company you have. And I believe all of you would agree. Wine also helps in keeping you warm and helps in regulating the heart rate if taken in reasonable amounts.

7. GATHERING UP

This is a special time to sit down and celebrate with loved ones over a scrumptious meal. People who work overseas save their vacation leave for this. And that is mostly observed among Filipinos. But I must say, wherever you are, as long as your family and loved ones are with you, that's where the feast is. Like what my sister shared, let's not forget to be thankful and to gather as much every chance we get. The Holidays are not just the only time to celebrate what we have. Life is short and showing our love and giving time to our family should be done every time if you may. You don't want to wait until it's too late to do that.

8. MAKING MEMORIES

Take as many photos as you can of somebody's Christmas outfit, your mom's stew, or your gift and have it posted up to remind you of such happiness that you once owned. I got one of my god daughter taken because I loved how comfortable she was in being a walking "attitude". She loves attention (I mean, who doesn't!???) and she's such a darling. She loves celebrating and she loves seeing people coming together and having fun. Check this out! I think, her outfit says it all!

There's nothing more rewarding than being part of good memories. Hearing your family's achievements and seeing them grow from an experience to the next is inspiring.

9. KEEPING IN TOUCH

Reality bites to some who are not fortunate of means to get closer to their loved ones because of distance, a passed argument or lack of time. And it's always hard to find the right time to do something about it. Little do we know that this is the best season to reach out, make amends and remember ties that you've suppressed but was kept dearly in your heart. There is an elating force when this Christmas comes and it's not wrong to take advantage of it. The natural high that it radiates to all of us is an encouragement to be the better person and to be able to let go of the past. It is a stepping stone to renewing bonds and making better ones. Social networks have been quite a medium to a lot of advertisements, unsolicited comments (ha!) and news that actually are irrelevant to our lives. Why not make a good use of it by keeping in touch with the people that matters to you most and start by wishing them Happy Holidays.

10. CELEBRATING LIFE

It holds a great impact in life to realize how fortunate I am compared to others. I am not looking at it in the context that what I have is all better but, I couldn't find of anything more to wish for except time and health for me to have more days with my family. I did mention this on my birthday post but I am saying it again. That is a reason for me to celebrate life and the best way to celebrate is to share to the ones dear to us by blessing them of what we have in abundance.

Blessing a person could be in a way of listening, surprising them with a cooked viand if they are from a busy day of work or a mere wish for them to have a prosperous year ahead, or by just inviting them over in the name of merriment. The idea is, it could be anyhow. It may be a huge step to take if we just randomly pick somebody to let them inside our house so, be careful with that. But there are ways that you could extend that calling to give and share. Start with the ones near you.

And most of all, acknowledge God above of that ability to extend a helping hand, of that roof in your heads and be appreciative of what you have. The world is round and the lives on the other side may be different from yours. If you are reading this, you are 1 of the world's 1/3 that has access to the internet. The rest don't even know it and maybe barely thriving. That's a blessing right there.

That's it for my top 10! You are welcome to share yours. Just leave the blog addresses that you wrote it on and it would be a blessing to read your shared thoughts. You are welcome to leave any addition as well via the comment boxes below! Enjoy the Holidays!
