ARISING ENTREPRENEURS

From the research I made about entrepreneurship, so many have participated as they know what I'm writing for is to inspire and educate people in terms of their own testimonials in living "the" dream. I feel abundantly blessed as I thought I would have a hard time gathering people. But with a strong and honest pursuit of encouraging business owner wanna-be's to make it happen, it all came to me making another post.

Here are the fearless purposeful people who, now stands, as CEO's of their own offices. Maybe some of them here may give something to the "idea" that you have in making it big. After all, theirs was just an idea before too.

1. DANCE FOR JOY HK LIMITED

I am taking advantage of the fact that I am in the entertainment business and that many of my friends had expanded their creativity into owning a fitness company. I am surrounded by many a number of talented people and it is a privilege to know some of them personally. Moreover, I have worked alongside these people.

Some of the best times of my life
was sharing the stage and "the weather" with these two.

Dance for Joy Fitness brings dance lovers, passionate performers and willing talents to come together as they rediscover their drive to move. I perfectly remember how Bill is so excited with all the business ideas he has in mind when he talks about going for his aspirations in life during our break time. It's actually entertaining in a way because he has an unbreakable WILLINGNESS and HUGE ENTHUSIASM in just about everything that will make money. I remember him saying that he doesn't want to work forever and that he wants to be able to afford a lifestyle where everything that he likes to do like spending time with his family, traveling and dining with friends (to name only a few) may be sustained.

On the other hand, Faye, his wife is so supportive and is totally heads on to this aspiration alongside her husband. Faye is a living proof of the saying, "A strong woman is behind every successful man".

They are both business-minded and they have gone from one business idea to the next starting when they were still in college. From selling cd's to putting up food and fruit retail or wholesale, they have collected a sum of experience which led them to keeping Dance For Joy HK Limited up, being their first ever serious business and the one that stood the longest. It had actually made both of them quit their 8 hour jobs because of a great demand and number of people walking in.

NAME OF COMPANY: DANCE FOR JOY HK LIMITED

NATURE OF BUSINESS: Adult Dance Fitness and dance classes for children and other events

OWNERSHIP: Sole proprietors are the husband and wife, Bill and Faye

LOCATION: Tung Chung and Kowloon

NUMBER OF YEARS BEFORE IT WAS ESTABLISHED: 3 years since they started into conducting adult dance classes then they expanded from there according to customer demand.

EDGE OF THE PRODUCT (how is it different from others): Their unique service offers courses that are focused on individuals who are non-experienced dancers. Their syllabus is made simple as it starts in a simple step made easy and fun. This is empowering not only to the highly trained individuals but to those who also are seeking new ways to channel their creativity, passion and stamina.

INVESTED MONEY ON THE BUSINESS:

PRICE RANGE OF THE PRODUCT:
Private classes range - HK$90-1100
For events, price depends on the client's budget and preference.

PLANNED INVESTMENT, A HOBBY OR ULTIMATE DREAM? With their drive to succeed in life, they are able to cover their what if's and worries by taking a leap of faith. They believe that nothing will happen in your life if you're not going to do anything in life. That being said, they decided to go for this while they're young to learn and to achieve having no regrets with each passing time.

TRAINING: Their previous jobs had provided training for them as performers before.

IS THIS YOUR FIRST BUSINESS? First MAJOR business venture.

FURTHER PLANS (expansion) ? They plan to expand their business outside HK.

LITTLE TRIVIA ABOUT THE BUSINESS: Back in 2011, it was a SPA owner that encouraged Bill to go for this business.

"Make a timetable for your dreams and don't make excuses.
LIFE is never easy but the HARD WORK is worth it."

2. LUKE BAR AND RESTAURANT

Now the next one I'm about to feature is an extraordinary entrepreneur since Chad Caluza, who was a colleague way back when he was still working at the happiest place on Earth, infused his skill and had made a business out of himself. Chad Caluza's skill and talent had made way for a new restaurant to rise up in Woodland Hills, California and that makes him "it"!

"My advice to you who is pursuing your dream is to just DO IT!
There are FAR too many people who are talking about
their dreams but there are not enough who are actually
pursuing them. There are NO EXCUSES in when it
comes to what you actually want, otherwise, you
don't want it that bad after all! So JUST DO IT!"
As a contract project manager, Chad is in demand by basically a lot of uprising buildings which include restaurants, offices and/or warehouses. Though what he can do is not limited to that, the ability to create is liberating for him to share his knowledge, expertise and skills. For this most recent project, he was assigned as the Assistant Project Manager and he is more than excited to open the doors of their creation. They had come up with a design and managed the construction of an entire space from conception to completion. Speaking in a metaphor, it's a breakthrough of a blank canvas to a masterpiece.

NAME OF COMPANY:
LUKE BAR AND RESTAURANT

OWNERSHIP: None

LOCATION: 22616 Ventura Boulevard, Woodland Hills, California

NUMBER OF YEARS BEFORE IT WAS ESTABLISHED:

Now, having a restaurant developer contract this half Filipino, half American bachelor had his turbo buttons on fire. As it took just a year for the whole dream to happen, it had to go thru a whole process such as:

1. Market analysis of the location comparing it to other restaurants, understanding the need for a project of this size and scope in relation to other like businesses

2. Developing a design concept from the interior architecture to the small details such as, tables, chairs, barstools, flatwares, plates, etc.

3. Managing demo and construction phases.

Farm-to-restaurant design of the new place, LUKE

4. Creating operational guidelines.

5. Hiring and training of staff

6. Menu Development - creating and tasting of different dishes.

EDGE OF THE PRODUCT (how is it different from others):
The edge of Chad in coming up with this restaurant is helping it achieve its ambition to come up with something stylish and elegant taking it a level up in comparison to the usual restaurants available to every Laker. Yet making it trendy enough to still be able to cater to a casual crowd, they intend to follow the trend in the culinary world.

"It is definitely a different world where I
have to market myself and to continue
to network as I move thru this industry."
INVESTED MONEY ON THE BUSINESS: Apart from the education he had to take up, traveling  had helped him to become well invested in terms of what's trending and what people look for and how to keep them coming back. So all in all, the invested money on himself was partially paid and it was in pursuit of his own advancement. Technically, it's more of the matriculation to be considered as the invested money.

PRICE RANGE OF THE PRODUCT: Chad works on contractual basis. Depending on what skill (or physical look - as a face character) is needed of him, pricing is confidential.

PLANNED INVESTMENT, A HOBBY OR ULTIMATE DREAM? For him, it is an ultimate dream to be part of something innovative. He is inspired by design and development of physical spaces and how people interact with these spaces. By being a part of this creative process, he provides a vision into making other people's dream come to life.

TRAINING: Though he got a degree in a related field, Chad admitted that he got most of his ideas and creativity from his mentor and on-site experiences.

IS THIS YOUR FIRST BUSINESS? He treats being a contract project manager for Luke as his first time to consider himself and his skills a business.

FURTHER PLANS (expansion)? Chad plans on continuing his expertise on being a construction project manager. He doesn't want to be limited with just designing but he wants to be able to manage projects of larger scope.

CONTACT DETAILS:

Chad is contracted through two different development groups:
- The DMB Group (restaurant development)
- Smike Wallen Living (real estate and residential design/development)

Besides the email illustrated above, he can also be sent of an email thru chadcaluza@gmail.com.

3. It's truly inspiring when people that you had made connections with strive for what they're passionate about. You actually would sense who stands out and a colleague of mine, Kath, is one of them my gut considered as one a long time ago. We worked together in the happiest place on earth and she was always cooperative, caring and acknowledging when I had some issues with the costume. She communicated well in terms of English so she understood right away what needs to be adjusted.

She left and for a long time I didn't get hold of her. I found out that she had pursued her small business called K'ish Handmade. She does her personal mixture of soap and relative products. Kath never seize to amaze me of how extraordinary she is in so many ways. Her small business had led her to conducting a workshop on how to do your own lip balm which I had documented here.

NAME OF COMPANY:
K'ISH HANDMADE

NATURE OF BUSINESS:
Handcraft Natural Soap and relative products

OWNERSHIP:
It is Kath's and she has no partners. She works solo.

LOCATION: Hong Kong

NUMBER OF YEARS BEFORE IT WAS ESTABLISHED:
3 years

EDGE OF THE PRODUCT (how is it different from others): Because this is homemade, there's no limitation as to how you could be creative with your own product. Kath handles workshops letting her clients know how to do soaps and other relative products then allowing them to choose the ingredients to use, encouraging them as to how the presentation of the product is going to be and moreover, letting them experiment on what is best to go together.

PRICE RANGE OF THE PRODUCT: HK$50-HK$80/100g

PLANNED INVESTMENT, A HOBBY OR ULTIMATE DREAM?
This had been Kath's hobby. She wanted to just share it at first but she found out that so many people loved doing it that they are willing to pay her to be able to learn from her.

Kath's advise to those pursuing their dreams:
"Keep moving."
WHAT ENCOURAGED YOU TO TAKE THE FIRST STEP?
"I think this is good for your health since you can actually gauge how much necessary SPF should be in there for your skin, what ingredients you can use and you can make it as organic as possible. And that it could be great gifts for your friends," Kath reiterates.

IS THIS YOUR FIRST BUSINESS?
Kath like I said is extraordinary in so many ways since she also has a dog grooming business which makes it her first and bigger business. Soap making is truly just a hobby on the side. And to have that large scope of understanding when it comes to business, Kath is blessed.

FURTHER PLANS (expansion) ? For now, she has no further plans. She just want to focus fully on her budding businesses before going for an upgrade or expansion.

LITTLE TRIVIA ABOUT THE BUSINESS: Kath's beautifully handmade soaps are all made up of natural ingredients she picks herself and its simple and subtle colours are aimed for an elegant look.

K'ish Handmade
Contact Person: Kath Tang
Contact email: Kish.handmade@gmail.com

There you go folks! Three people making it happen.

In this competitive world, success in your hands is just but an idea away. Pursuing something is not easy. All good companies that our world trust today needed to be established and I assure you, it took more than 10 years for them to be able to do that. The way to go is to start NOW. Stop procrastinating and start "do"ing!

FABULOUS FINDS THIS NOVEMBER

For this month of November, I have known of these stuff randomly that I find it hard not to share.

I had to document my mom's first visit to Venetian.
This was how big their shuttle buses are.
1. FREE transportation.

First and foremost, I was privileged to have a getaway for my birthday in Macau with my mom. So, it's good to let first timers in here know that there are an array of free shuttle buses (namely for the Venetian Hotel, Sands Resort and the newest hotel called Studio City, Macau) for you to take if you are up for checking in for a night or two. No need for you to worry about funds getting eaten up just to go to and fro the Macau Ferry Terminal from your hotel. I traveled along with my 1 year old too. I had a stroller and a mini luggage but transportation became easy breezy because of their first class bus service free for anybody who wishes to visit the hotel.Of course, since it is quite famous amongst tourists, the line was long but as I have observed, bus after bus comes to cater to that much people that waiting time can be estimated to 10minutes tops.

2. FREE Souvenir Photo that will be delivered straight to your email.

Since we are talking about the Venetian Hotel already, I would like to advertise it further. Hahaha! So with our accommodation comes a free souvenir photo that was to be claimed in the lobby near the check-in counter. The Venetian Hotel was grande so it took a long time for us to identify which check-in counter they meant but we had come across a free Photo Booth across the Noodle House. We were confused if this was the free photo thing but it wasn't. It was just readily available for somebody who has the time to strike a pose. Once you have had your photo taken, you will be asked if you'd like it to be forwarded to you via email and voila! These are the photos we had taken!

So finally we got hold of the free 3R photo afterwards which was to my disappointment was too small. No wonder it was free. So for a good souvenir, we had an official photo taken at one of the most beautiful halls of the hotel and paid for the photo. I have posted an extra large photo of the ones from the Photo Booth so that you can take note of its quality. Of course, you could tell like it's a fake backdraft but it's still cool for me in terms of the size, the famous spots to choose from (I think there were more or less 9 to choose from) and its availability online for easy posting on social media. If you are traveling on a budget, this is a good way to get hold of a memorable experience.

This is the photo we have purchased from their official photographer for a souvenir.
If it's not 3 generations of beauties in this picture, I'd say, the Photo Booth produced
much better picture than this one. There are a lot of photo bombers, the artwork at the back is cut,
the paintings on the ceiling cannot even be seen. But that's why people are taking
their shots here, for those art pieces. Oh well... that's just my opinion.
I posted this for your own comparison which I am more than willing to hear.
Just don't hesitate to leave your comment below.

3. PUBLIC Weighing Scale.

Like all trips, there's always the sad part of saying goodbye. So as my mom's flight with China Airlines got upgraded to a "Cathay Pacific" flight, Brave and I were just playing while waiting. Hong Kong International Airport got a massive weighing scale that is available for everybody to check their luggage's weight onto. Some people need a lot of adjustments when they don't think paying extra for that much excess baggage is worth it. So, here's something that is of big help I'm sure to a lot of tourists.

Are you planning to buy a house and lot with your hard earned money? Land a property or learn how you could keep it secure by attending this seminar by Mr. Noli Manuel El Subastahero Alleje. All you need is register here as the 3 sessions can only hold 60 people max each session.

MREANDMISST experience thru PLATE CULTURE

Picture having an intimate gourmet dinner, with your foodie friends or your partner, at a roof top with wine at hand, at a comfort of a home, with the chef dining with you and explaining to you each entree. Yes, this is just a click away!

my lovely Wednesday foodie group

A new trend in dining out had emerged people! This Autumn, take advantage of the cool weather and book your dinner from this online foodie platform, Plate Culture. Available in Malaysia, Singapore, Philippines, Thailand and in Hong Kong, Plate Culture combines social dining with a one of a kind experience at a foodie's house. Depending on what you crave for, Plate Culture approved chefs are more than happy to welcome you in their beautiful homes, with their lovely pets and warm hospitality. The beauty of it is that information you need about each home is just but one click away. Not to mention, the hearty meal that they feature are like no other.

Tans and Warwick
MrEandMissT
Check them out in Plate Culture!
As I went over the choices, I got attracted to MrEandMissT's simply decorated rooftop escape in Central. For HK$252/person, I did not hesitate to book a couple of nights with them to maximise the experience. I read thru where Warwick (MrE)'s passion for food and the perfect combination with sous chef Tans (MissT)'s support, rest assured that you would get more of your money's worth. I wouldn't spoil what the online platform had set for you to discover so just check it out on Plate Culture.

But it was interesting to know how they have been chosen to join the group. They have entered their name in this website and people from Plate Culture contacted them and had asked them to present and cook their best dish complete with plating and the works. Heavens are in their favour despite the fact that what they do for a living is teach and cooking is a passion on the side. I cannot even find the words on how to label their food as every entree is solely their own. You cannot say it's South African (since they were from South Africa) nor you can't say it's purely Western since they embrace usage of the Chinese 5-spice. But as you taste their food, it's like fireworks in your mouth.

It is a must for me to bring along people who have the same enthusiasm for food whenever I am up to trying something new. So, I had to gather with my Wednesday group, the most non judgemental bunch, when it comes to indulging to what my *GIT craves for.

Hosts featured in Plate Culture here in Hong Kong can be easily contacted thru the website's messenger. The booking process won't be done unless you and the host have decided on a date. At the beginning, you will be asked to tell something about yourself, who's joining you and as to the food preferences you may have. Once the hosts approved of the date, you'd be sent a payment link via email that is good to book only within the day. It was pretty quick and easy provided you have all your credit card details correct. As soon as you make the payment, the address and the contact number of the host would be sent to you along with the instructions on how to get there. What I love about this is that Warwick was very helpful, contacting me on the side regarding little mishaps here and there.

They are located at Hollywood Road and their rooftop sits atop the 8th floor. It was a work up since there was no elevator to get us there but as soon as I got my wine at hand, I instantly felt relaxed and Warwick and Tans are exceptionally good and warm hosts. They offered us cold water right away. Honestly, my friend and I felt like a mess since we were sweaty but they welcomed us with a sincere hug. As soon as we got complete, the appetisers were served since it was around quarter passed 9 by then.

Warwick had introduced us to this robust flavoured appetiser explaining which he put on what. Honestly, I am no food critic until I get to taste something. But I feel so honoured to be explained of what I am about to experience. They call this the "Perfect Salmon Spoonful". With salmon as the star of this dish, it came in 3 Chinese soup spoonfuls laid on a wooden plate. (Unique plating, check!) They added beetroot to gravlax to give this Norweigan elegance a fantastic colour. The orange, salt and gin added depth to its flavour while the avocado mousse sits atop. This starter owns a secret. It's the sweet sensational popping candy that makes this starter my official favourite!

The set up at MrEandMissT's on their rooftop
is an escape overlooking the stillness and beauty
of Hollywood Road, Central.
As we gulped down 3 spoonfuls of this magnificent delight in no time, Warwick and Tans shared to us how they met, that their language is called "Zulu", what challenges a teacher in Asia usually encounters and how they got Plate Culture to feature them. It's amazing to know that they are teachers by profession  during the day but are chefs and hosts in the evening. It was actually so good of these two to consider my booking since they were full that week. When they approve a night for people to come over, you are guaranteed of a good time. After fun exchange of stories, they gave us more time to chit chat and catch up as they prepare the main course.

Crispy duck breast with
cherry sauce and blue cheese mash
When their menu said, crispy duck breast, this main dish conformed beautifully to it as the skin was truly crisp but the meat was cooked tenderly that it melted and exploded altogether with the blue cheese and cauliflower combined mash and cherry sauce in my mouth. I am a duck, carrot and asparagus lover so, this was a "10" for me! That night, they had pushed their taste buds to the limit for deciding on adding a Chinese five-spice to it. Kicker slices of fig enriched the roasted duck with that umph at the end of each bite. It was just right of a serving for a gourmet dish I must say. Plating, another 10 for the richness in colour, interesting presentation and right amount of sauces and mashed equalisers. And of course, since this night had inspired Warwick to continue being adventurous with his passion, he had done a new dessert.

Tans' support for this new dessert made her brag about it. Rightfully, it earned its reputation. New York Cheesecake probably is one of the most famous dessert ever made in human history. But what Warwick made, he transformed it to a Nutella cheesecake with an Oreo base that assures your tactile sensation with a rich, creamy popping dessert. Balanced with Vanilla ice cream, the Nutella cheesecake ends our journey to hailing food for that Wednesday night with a memorable aftermath. Flushed out with red wine, it was perfect.

I booked a second dinner with a different set of friends since I loved my experience at MrEandMissT's abode that I had to bring a foodie blogger along with me, Andre Cheung (spotthefood.blogspot.com.hk). For this experience, we had roasted pumpkin nested by ricotta conchiglie. Atop sits a Parmesan crusted walnut dusted with olive caviar that completes the crunchy feel of this lovely appetiser. I am not quite sure if the pasta shells were intentionally cooked crunchy too to sit well on a plating of the refreshing parsley puree.

Roasted Pumpkin on a Ricotta Conchiglie

It was quite reassuring by this time that I would have another whole experience as they have changed the menu for my second visit. Even the place was decorated differently that made so much of the greens of their rooftop pop together with the plating. The lights glowed quietly every two seconds and it complimented the warm air blowing thru the night. I'm amazed at how they had moved the furnitures to open it up more to a breezy atmosphere but a week of rainy storms were expected so, we craved for iced water more than once and lay lowed on the wine.

After an exchange of familiar stories, work experiences and amazing cultural differences, a half hour catching up with my ladies had built up the excitement and craving for the main entree which was pan seared salmon.

Pan seared Salmon with Mango, avocado, beetroot side salsa and with a Coconut Mango Curry Sauce

As we all know, pan seared salmon is already a treat. Packed with nutritious benefits, it oozes out essential omega-3 oil that is good for the heart. But MrEandMissT took advantage of its plain glazed barbecue colour and paired it with a tower of three of my friend, Cathy's, favourites: mango salsa,  avocado and diced glazed beetroot. All of these served on a wooden plating with duck fried potatoes, and a portion of fennel and the last touch which I think is the best thing that made this dish so irresistible is the magical coconut mango curry sauce. These flavours altogether are unfolding a viand that is so delicious, the words to describe it are not even discovered yet.

We didn't wait that long before they served the uniquely plated dessert which they call:

"Salted Caramel Chocolate Delight". Dusted with ground cinnamon, this dessert is served together with a South African milk tart and a scoopful of Almond ice cream. The rich caramel chocolate balances the creaminess of the milk tart. This dessert amazingly lets the explosive flavours from the main entree sit right since it satisfies your cravings for just about anything. This whole dinner gave us everything we love. Salmon, avocado, mango, cinnamon and most of all, cheese!!!! Only MrEandMissT can give you that all at once in one sitting.

Just in case you are curious, here are some of the ingredients that we don't get to see and taste everyday that were also featured in their meals.

Beetroot

Fennel
Capers
Figs
Mizuna, a spider mustard leaf,
commonly used to garnish salads
Everytime I get hold of a new food experience, it always reminds me of an opportunity to get immersed to an extraordinary form of expression. With every food or meal being cooked, I am aware that it takes a great deal of effort, love and passion as it expresses the chef's totality. His experience as a whole, his capacity to reach deep within and most of all, to leave a mark that will never ever be forgotten is magical on its own. There is more to food than most of us know. I love how it brings people together and I love its main purpose on each of us. To nurture.

Thank you MrEandMissT! Because of you, my first Plate Culture Experience had been lovely. When I was talking to people about whether it's of Italian South African or French I can never pinpoint which it belongs to because it's solely Warwick's and Tansy's. I'll definitely go for another round of that new menu!

UAAP CHEER DANCE COMPETITION 2015

It was a great Saturday afternoon to ogle over TFC.tv's livestream of the 2015 UAAP CDC all the way from Hong Kong that featured 8 universities continuously battling over the bragging rights of being the Champion of this annual cheer dance competition.

As a cheerleader myself, I can't help but get hooked and be supportive of my own group, the UST Salinggawi Dance Troupe. Along with the best couch partner, my daughter, Brave, I allowed myself to criticise each participant according to pure personal opinion. To all of you who weren't able to watch, here are the links to each school as per real sequence on the very day.

1. UP PEP SQUAD

I honestly thought it was a very good starter. They have set a difficult standard for the rest of the competitors to beat. The level of difficulty of each stunt was undeniably high.

Personally, I find their usage of rock music to keep a cheer dance routine up to be a suicide. Everything was all good but the music pulled the vibe down. The message of infusing every deed they do with heart and mind revived it though. So it was smart to put the last blow of the routine at the end. Overall, they did a great job. UP had won Best in Pyramid and Best in Toss (NO FEAR dive to a 3rd level tango lift was superb!) with minor fallbacks and the same pyramids as before.

But I agree to most of the commentators (favouring UP) that when you are the first to perform, judges hold back when grading. They have the tendency to be strict that no matter how good the performers are, their grades are expected to be meticulously low. As you watch the rest of the performers, your emotions escalate directly with the expectation that the next one should be better than before to earn high grades. Theoretically speaking, judgement becomes inconsistent this way. Because the panel gives the paper after scoring each group to a designated personnel right after each routine. You'll understand later as I go further.

2. Next to UP, was DLSU ANIMO SQUAD

OK, it was a given. From the beginning, you could tell some of their dancers were not that confident in executing their stunts. Like how my outright comment goes in my FB status, it looked like the sound editor/manager was going thru something with his/her choices of music to be put together in coming up with the routine. "Lips of an Angel", I loved that song. But... seriously? I got no more words hearing that in their routine.

3. ATENEO BLUE BABBLE BATTALION

I AM SORRY. But it is a shame that they have the funds to get trained well and they don't get to utilise it to the maximum. The nastiest tweets are owned by the Ateneo Blue Babble Battalion this year that goes: "Oh, Ateneo Blue Battalion is next? OK, that calls for a bladder break!". I don't mean to be negative but this is just stating the real comments. Mine went: "Oh! Their theme was James Bond, I thought it was Mission Impossible" from the choices of stunts to be performed looked i-m-p-o-s-s-i-b-l-e!!!!! They weren't able to deliver. I like their costume though, since my favourite colour is BLUE.

4. NU PEP SQUAD

They didn't fail to put spectators at the edge of their seats. For 3 years now, they are consistently reigning. But compared to their previous performances, I'm pretty sure they are disappointed. It was such clean, perfect execution from last year to a lot of major falls that were hard to ignore. They will forever own the labels, "monsters or aliens" because of how strong they are with their thumblings and tosses that it gave the judges another platform for setting their standards again from this point on in comparison to how they have set U.P. in the beginning. Because of the excitement that had built up, the scores became super high and hard to beat. I'm pretty sure by this time, some of the judges had already forgotten how good the UP Pep Squad was in the beginning.

5. UE PEP SQUAD

"CIRCUS" for a theme is always risky.
But UE managed to control its tendency to be chaotic
by performing their routines as clean and perfect as possible.
Galing! Clap clap clap."

That was my opinion right after watching UE perform their entry in the 78th CDC. But watching it again made me see the major falls. I must say they need to know the pulse of each other more. The tosses were high and since my Salinggawi days, they own those sturdy bases responsible for the  high basket tosses. By this time, I can't wait to watch UST already. But they don't come 'til the last one.

6. ADAMSON PEP SQUAD

By this time, I am tired of seeing a 2 straddle jump to a back tuck stunt. (I mean, gosh! What's with it???!!! Why are all the schools doing it?) However, I find Adamson the most promising in aspiring to be in the top 3. They were consistent with their theme, they started strong and aimed to finish strong. And their theme was most unique. But modelling to be infused in a cheering routine? Never mind.

7. FEU CHEERING SQUAD

You could totally see that each of their cheering squad members worked hard in doing this dance. There are a lot of newbies I could tell as I've observed the first time I saw their routine. You could tell who are the seniors because they are keeping up the fight as shown in some of the shots. FEU's choreography and blocking are always clean. Their entry consisted of a lot of types of dances namely, broadway, circus (same with UE) and breakdancing. They are very very strong kids but because of that much work up, major falls happened that had made them lose huge amount of points.

8. UST SALINGGAWI DANCE TROUPE

It is expected that UST, a champion for 8 times alongside UP, will be giving out a good fight since it had always been a tradition of the Salinggawi Dance Troupe to aim and land as the best. For me, they deserve to win for a perfectly executed routine. Call me biased but UST has the most minimal number of errors. That alone would be enough as basis. I am more than proud of this year's performance. My husband (who is not a cheerleader at all) alone had goosebumps with the opening chants of the group. And I remained overwhelmed until the end.

Now, it is pretty controversial how NU got the first place, UST got the 1st runner up award and lastly, UP landing on the 3rd place. Looking at the score sheet, critics had written posts about discrepancies in how the judges had come up with their grades. With my experiencing in judging beauty pageants and competitions, I make use of individual category scoring but I don't choose my final 3 until the end of the last criteria for judging had been done. This way, I could readjust if it's necessary. I put small notes also at the side for the highlights that is worth remembering. But then again, that's just me. And there's no chance for UAAP's CDC judges to make amends as they pass the score sheet right after each school presents their dance.

I want to end my post with a HUGE CONGRATULATIONS TO Kuya Ramon Pagaduan IV and the rest of the UST Salinggawi Dance Troupe 2015 Competitors. Saludo po ko! I believe you deserve more than 1st runner up but it still comes as a blessing.

NEW POLYNESIAN CLUBS IN HONGKY!

Finding Tiki Bars in Hong Kong is unimaginable. Due to the game of Rugby that Hong Kong hails annually, the Polynesian influence was given a way to make a name. There stands two in the most in-demand districts, Central and Wan Chai, cocktail tiki bars ready to get checked out for a good time and an escape to experiencing the Poly vibe.

Being married to a Polynesian feeds the islander in me. Philippines own more than 7,000 islands and my dad had imparted unforgettable experiences to me (being a true islander blooded fella' himself, who was born and raised in Romblon) honing my true love for it! In the end, I got attracted to a Samoan warrior and wouldn't mind settling in the heart of the Polynesia (Samoa) later on.

For now that we are spending our productive years in Hong Kong, we crave the island life every now and then. With the hustles and bustles of this vibrant city, we owe ourselves time to unwind. I must admit, a night out (or two) a month keeps me sane for I find it relaxing. Needless to say, going out once in a while keeps me in balance. It keeps everyone in balance when you don't let go of that word, "play!" This weekend, try bringing your friends to these TIKI BARS that mix rums with fruit puree's giving your usual happy hour a refreshing funk! It's different from the usual house party though urban style is still mixed up with it.

HONI HONI TIKI COCKTAIL LOUNGE

I love how it has a big space for islanders to actually lounge in. You see, they are not small (nor will they ever be) at all. This is a huge factor to consider with "anything" Polynesian. No offence meant, Polynesian people naturally own a gene pool of huge, strong human beings. Imagine "The Rock", Dwayne Johnson.... yep! The famous WWF legend. Imagine 10 of those in a room. OK, now you grasp my idea of "They need space!" Now, Honi Honi for sure had that in mind when considering the interior design of this cocktail bar. Since there's only one Polynesian bar in Central, big names in rugby would eventually visit this bar for its rarity.

TROPICAL STORM
For more information about the cocktails
available in Honi Honi, click here
The seats are comfortably covered with synthetic felt and are well cushioned, interior is made up of bamboo with warm lighting and toilets are designed conformingly to the theme with tiki men and women labels. The vibe is fresh because of the greens by the veranda and the open space just gives the place a windy feel. Now that summer is almost over, the breeze would be cooler for you to enjoy more pina coladas!

We got a nice place to sit on by the corner of the bar (indoors) and knowing it's just offering cocktails and finger foods, we had dinner first in the comfort of our homes before going to the place.

I started the night with the usual white sauvignon blanc just because it's always my comfort drink. But I started to get jealous and curious all at the same time when my friends' Honi Honi signature drinks started to come. I was forced to chug down my white wine to make way for an adventurous drink.

I went for the TROPICAL STORM that is a mixture of Grey Goose Vodka, Elderflower Syrup, Guava Nectar, Passion Fruit Puree and Strawberry Puree. Hmmm.... what can I say? It's a spa in a mug kind of cup... The fire when it got served gave it a 9 star rate. Drinks are starting from HK$120 and up.

Our only worry was that, it didn't have that much alcohol that you need to probably ask the waiter to make it stronger if you must. Don't get me wrong, I am not an alcoholic but with that much money out, you want to get what you deserve for its worth.
the washrooms

Recently, they have Wednesday nights for ladies who are daring to unleash their creativity by making their own tiki cocktail mix. In addition, the bartenders have monthly mixes fresh out from their imaginative tactile skills that are priced cheaper than the others since it's for you to try and critic. AHI MOANA (priced at HK$90) consists of Bacardi Oakheart Spiced Rum, Orange Peel, Lime Juice, Sugar and Soda water - a splashy kick to get through the hump day!

Honi Honi is located at the 3/F, Somptueux, Central, 52 Wellington St.,  Central, Hong Kong. My brother-in-law's girlfriend had booked an area for us because we thought it would be filled up since it was a Thursday night of May that time. But surprisingly, it's not that full until 12mn. But people came crawling in huge groups after that. Since it's just at Wellington and is basically a block away from the rest of the bars, we didnt have a hard time getting into them because Honi Honi was accessible either way, up to Soho or to Lan Kwai Fong. Phone reservations can be made too by calling 2353-0885.

MAHALO TIKI LOUNGE

Now, this is yet another promising treat in the middle of Wan Chai's busy streets. You think it's only about it being a red hot district but, secluded at the 29th floor, QRE Plaza, 202 Queens Road East, Wan Chai, Hong Kong, a floor opens up to this Polynesian jewel, the Mahalo Tiki Lounge.

the washroom's faucet
I can't emphasise on how spacious it is until you go check it out yourself. Upon entering the lounge, a dance floor awaits facing the bar where an array of spirits and rums are displayed. Much like that of TIKI TIKI Cocktail Bar but besides the facade where these couches are nestled, sliding doors give way to a similar veranda where party goers that prefer staying outdoors may lounge. The big windows open up but not entirely. I wasn't really sure if the roof opens up too since it was pretty crowded the night we went there for a friend's birthday party. But one thing's for sure, it was breezy and we loved how the wind blowing towards us where we chose to hang out by the sofas. It was a summer evening in July so a cool breeze was unexpected. Hanging on the walls are authentic Hawaiian performers showcasing their culture thru stolen shots that says a lot about its richness and truth.

One thing interesting about the club is that everything is one-of-a-kind. Its design, the drinking cups,... their menu is even in a scroll. It leads you to choosing a map of signature Polynesian drinks. With the same crew I was with in checking out Honi Honi, plus more friends, we opt for a huge drink (which in my opinion wasn't still that strong with regards to its alcohol content!)

lighting up the scroll of menu as we
chose our drink
For HK$900, I think 9 also went for a sip of the RAISING SUN. It is a mix of Bacardi Superior Rum, Bacardi Black Rum, Clement Orange Shrubb Liqueur, Blended Passion Fruit, Mango juice, Apple juice, Cartron Peach Liqueur and Watermelon.

OK, I think, 60% of it was watermelon. Uncool!

Probably, the alcohol was just settling down and wasn't mixed properly but it was enough for 9 people. Not bad! I have ordered a mojito on the side, and then we called it a night.

Reservations can be made by calling 2488-8750. Opening hours are from 12pm for lunch - 2am during Mondays thru Thursdays. Fridays same but until 3am. Saturdays, they open around 6pm to 3am. Sundays 4pm-12mn. Click here if you prefer online reservations.

The only bad thing that my husband and I noticed was the music they used. It would be best if they'd play reggae music at least. But it was a house kind of thumping and that's just what turned us off the hook. It was all beautiful and inviting except the music. Polynesian people love to dance. In fact, they are so fond of telling their folklores thru music and dance. So, if you want a Poly bar to last long, the music's gotta' bring it. Or these boys would prefer other clubs to stomp into.

Killing the "Raising Sun"
Overall, in both bars, we had fun because this group had been going out since 8 years ago. So, being altogether, still up until now, is treasured no matter how the night ends up. It's truly a great time we had in visiting these tiki cocktail bars. So with what "mahalo" means in English, "Thank you" for another page turner in our book of happy times. I hope you readers will enjoy it as much as we did!
